How To Repair Oven Seals

Is there a product that will refix a loose rubber oven door seal without smelling at high temperatures?

Yes. For this job you can use either Selleys Auto Fix Instant Gasket or Selleys Silicone 401. Both have very good temperature resistance and will bond the rubber in place. Selleys' advice for this application is to allow at least 7 days to cure before you reuse the oven.

There is an important detail about which Instant Gasket to buy, covered below — the two versions of that product have different published limitations, and only one of them is right for a rubber seal.

Which Instant Gasket — and why it matters

Selleys publishes two Auto Fix Instant Gasket products, and their technical data sheets differ in a way that decides this job.

If you go the Instant Gasket route for an oven seal, use the High Temp version.

What the figures mean in practice

Both skin in 5 minutes. That is your entire window to seat the seal. Dry-fit the gasket in its channel, work out how you will hold it, and have tape or clips ready before you open the tube.

Cure figures and the 7-day advice. The Instant Gasket TDS states the material cures in 24 hours; Silicone 401 cures at 3 mm per 24 hours. Selleys' advice for this specific job is more conservative — allow at least 7 days before reusing the oven. That extra margin is worth taking. Curing silicone releases acetic acid, and a bead that is still curing when you first run the oven at 200 °C is exactly what produces the smell you are trying to avoid. A week of ventilation before the first bake is cheap insurance.

Silicone 401 needs air to cure. Its TDS says not to use it in totally confined joints where the sealant is not exposed to atmospheric moisture, and for adhesive use to ensure some residual external air contact to enable curing, with a minimum adhesive thickness of 0.2 mm. A gasket pressed hard into a closed channel can starve the sealant of the moisture it needs.

How to refix the seal

  1. Let the oven cool completely. Take the seal out and note how it sits before you disturb it.
  2. Remove the old sealant or gasket material and thoroughly clean the surfaces with mineral turpentine, then dry them. Baked-on grease is the usual reason these repairs let go.
  3. Dry-fit the seal and plan your supports.
  4. With Instant Gasket: remove the cap, unscrew the nozzle and remove the seal, replace the nozzle and cut it at a 45° angle. Squeeze with steady pressure to form a 1.5–3 mm thick bead.
  5. With Silicone 401: cut the cartridge, fit and cut the nozzle, and apply with a cartridge gun to one surface, mating the surfaces before a skin forms.
  6. Seat the seal within 5 minutes and hold or tape it in place.
  7. Clean up excess with mineral turpentine before the sealant cures.
  8. Leave the oven door open and the room ventilated, and allow at least 7 days before using the oven.

Limitations to check before you start

Common questions about repairing oven seals

Will it smell when the oven gets hot?

Allow at least 7 days to cure before you reuse the oven. Both products are rated for oven temperatures once cured — the High Temp Instant Gasket to 260 °C continuous with intermittent resistance to 343 °C, and Silicone 401 to 205 °C with short periods at 260 °C.

Which product should I choose?

Either works. Instant Gasket High Temp is red and comes in a 100 ml tube, which suits a small gasket job with no caulking gun. Silicone 401 is clear, comes in a 310 g cartridge, and has the higher elongation at break at 400%.

How thick should the bead be?

Instant Gasket's directions call for a 1.5–3 mm thick bead. Silicone 401 needs a minimum adhesive thickness of 0.2 mm and some external air contact.

Can I use an ordinary bathroom or roofing silicone?

No. Household sealants are not rated for oven temperatures. Roof & Gutter Silicone, for instance, has a service temperature ceiling of +150 °C and its TDS warns against use beyond that.

Can I use a glue instead?

Not an epoxy. Araldite Super Strong's bond softens above 60 °C, which an oven door exceeds within minutes.

How do I clean up?

Mineral turpentine, before the sealant cures. Cured Silicone 401 can only be removed by scraping or trimming with a blade.

What about the door glass rather than the seal?

Same product family, slightly different method — see how to repair an oven door.

Is there general guidance on silicone and heat?

Yes — see how temperature resistance affects silicone sealant performance.

What was the original question asked in this Selleys 'Ask an Expert' article?

The question was whether Selleys has a product to refix a loose rubber seal around a home oven door that can be used at high oven temperatures without creating a smell.

Which Selleys product is recommended for repairing oven seals?

Selleys Auto Fix Instant Gasket Sealant (High Temp) is the recommended product, as it is specifically designed for high-temperature environments and can be applied to oven doors and other oven surfaces.

What temperatures can Selleys Auto Fix Instant Gasket Sealant (High Temp) withstand?

It is a 100% acetoxy silicone that resists intermittent temperatures up to 343°C, making it suitable for the demanding conditions inside an oven.

How long does Selleys Auto Fix Instant Gasket Sealant (High Temp) take to cure?

The sealant develops a skin layer in 5 minutes after application and fully cures within 24 hours.

What is the movement capability of Selleys Auto Fix Instant Gasket Sealant (High Temp)?

It has a movement capability of 25% according to the ASTM C719 standard, allowing the seal to flex with thermal expansion and contraction.

Are there any parts of an oven where this sealant should not be used?

Yes, it should not be applied to rubber seals on oven doors or components, electrical connections within the oven, or any moving parts or areas requiring flexibility beyond the sealant's capability.

How should Selleys Auto Fix Instant Gasket Sealant (High Temp) be stored?

The sealant should be stored in cool, dry conditions below 30°C.

What should you check before applying this sealant to an oven?

You should consult the product's Safety Data Sheet for complete warnings, first aid information, and specific application instructions before applying the sealant.
