What is the best glue for sticking a facia back onto an oven door?

Selleys recommends Selleys Silicone 401 RTV. It will withstand the heat of the oven and should create a strong bond.

The reason a general-purpose adhesive is not an option here is straightforward: an oven door facia sits directly against the hottest part of a domestic appliance. Silicone 401 RTV remains permanently flexible under operating temperatures from −60 °C to 205 °C and will tolerate short periods of 260 °C. Most household glues are finished well below that — an epoxy such as Araldite Super Strong, for example, softens above 60 °C.

Why flexibility matters more than raw strength on a facia

A facia panel and the door behind it are usually different materials — a stainless or coated steel panel on a steel door, or a trim moulding on a metal frame. Each heats and cools at a different rate and expands by a different amount every time the oven is used. A rigid, high-strength adhesive turns that differential movement into stress at the bond line and eventually cracks.

Silicone 401's 400% elongation at break and 100% elastic recovery mean the adhesive layer stretches and returns rather than resisting. Its low Shore A hardness of 23 says the same thing: this is a soft, compliant bond, and that is the property that makes it survive thermal cycling.

Its good resistance to most organic and inorganic chemicals, solvents and oils is the other reason it suits an oven — the facia gets cleaned regularly, and oven cleaners are aggressive.

Check what the facia is made of

Silicone 401's listed substrates are most metal, glass, ceramic, some rigid plastic, painted and wood substrates, with primerless adhesion. That covers most facia panels, but note the wording: some rigid plastic. The TDS is explicit that chemical compatibility should be tested for each application under consideration — so if your facia is a plastic or composite trim, test a small area before committing.

How to do it

1. Let the oven cool completely, and take the door off if the design allows. Working flat is far easier than fighting gravity.
2. Remove any old adhesive and clean both surfaces so they are completely clean and dry. Baked-on grease and oven cleaner residue are the usual culprits behind a facia coming loose in the first place.
3. Dry-fit the facia and plan the tape, clamps or weights you will use, because you have very little time once the sealant is out.
4. Cut the cartridge, fit and cut the nozzle, and apply with a cartridge gun.
5. Apply the adhesive to one surface and mate the surfaces before a skin forms — the skin time is 5 minutes. Keep a minimum adhesive thickness of 0.2 mm; do not squeeze the joint completely dry.
6. Ensure some residual external air contact so the adhesive can cure. This is a moisture-curing product, and a fully sealed sandwich may never cure in the middle.
7. Tape or clamp the facia and leave it undisturbed. At 3 mm per 24 hours, allow at least a day, and longer for a thicker bond line.
8. Ventilate the room while it cures. Acetic cure silicone releases acetic acid, which is the sharp vinegar smell.

Limitations

• Cannot be over-painted. Complete any painting 7 days before applying the sealant.
• Do not use in totally confined joints where the sealant is not exposed to atmospheric moisture.
• Not recommended for use with petrol, distillate and some other hydrocarbon solvents.
• Chemical compatibility should be tested for each application.
• Use in a well-ventilated area and avoid contact with skin and eyes.

Common questions

How long before I can use the oven?

The cure rate is 3 mm per 24 hours, so allow at least a full day for a thin bond and longer for a thick one. Do not heat the oven while the adhesive is still curing.

Will it hold on stainless steel?

Most metals are listed substrates and adhesion is primerless. Clean the surface thoroughly — stainless comes with a very smooth, often oiled face that gives an adhesive nothing to work with.

What if the facia is plastic?

The TDS covers "some rigid plastic" and directs you to test chemical compatibility for each application. Test a small area first.

Why does it smell of vinegar?

It is an acetic cure silicone and releases acetic acid during cure. The smell goes as it sets. Ventilate the room.

Can I paint over it to hide the glue line?

No — it cannot be over-painted. It is clear, which helps.

Where do I buy it?

Silicone 401 is available in a 310 g cartridge and can be purchased from most major hardware retailers.

How do I clean up?

Uncured sealant comes off with mineral turps. Cured sealant can only be removed by scraping or trimming with a blade.
