Why dilution matters on wallpaper

Selleys Original Sugar Soap is a professional-strength concentrate with a pH of around 11. Why "sound condition" is the real test

Any liquid cleaning of wallpaper depends on the paper being intact and well adhered. Where a seam has lifted, where a corner is peeling, or where a previous leak has softened the paper, water carries the problem further — it gets behind the paper and into the adhesive.

Look along the seams and at the top and bottom edges before you start. If the paper is lifting anywhere near where you plan to clean, work well away from it, or accept that the mark stays.

Why you wipe over before it dries

Sugar Soap is a salts-based cleaner. When the solution dries on a surface rather than being wiped away, the water evaporates and the cleaning salts stay behind as a visible deposit. On wallpaper that leaves you with a pale bloom where the mark used to be — a second problem instead of a solved one.

2. Test in an inconspicuous spot first. Behind a door, low behind furniture, or inside a wardrobe if the paper continues in there. Let the test spot dry fully before you judge it.
3. Mix a diluted solution — half a cup into 5 litres of water, or weaker.
4. Apply with a well wrung-out cloth, not a soaking one. A Selleys Super Cloth is ideal. Work the mark gently rather than scrubbing; abrasion takes the print off.
5. Wipe over with a clean damp cloth before the solution dries, then blot with a dry cloth.
6. Work a small area at a time. That is the practical consequence of the drying rule.

For a single small mark, the wipes are easier. They put a controlled amount of product on the surface rather than a cloth full of solution, which suits spot work on paper.
