Can I use Selleys Oven Clean on the glass of an oven door?
No. Selleys does not recommend using Selleys Oven Clean on either the inside or the outside glass of an oven door. It is only to be used on the surrounding enamel surfaces inside the oven.
If you spill Selleys Oven Cleaner on the glass by accident, wipe it off immediately with a damp cloth or paper towel.
To clean the glass of oven doors, Selleys recommends Hillmark Cerapol Ceramic Glass & Induction Cooktop Cleaner. It is a ceramic glass cooktop cleaner, and it works well on oven door glass.
Why glass is on the exclusion list
Selleys Oven Clean is a caustic-based product. Its data sheet carries a long list of surfaces it must not be applied to, and glass is on it — alongside pilot lights, electrical connections, switches, heating elements, fan grills and blades, thermostats, rubber seals, exterior oven surfaces, bench tops, aluminium, copper, linoleum, painted surfaces, plastic, chrome, galvanised steel, and damaged or scratched non-stick cookware and bakeware.
The application directions repeat the point where it matters most: when spraying the oven, do not spray on the glass of the oven door. Start at the roof, finish with the door, and keep the product on the enamel.
The same restriction applies across the range. Selleys Oven Plus Heavy Duty Gel has its own do-not-use list, and glass is on that one too.
What Selleys Oven Clean is for, and how to use it
Used as directed on enamel oven surfaces, it is a fast cleaner. The two dwell times are the key figures:

Do not leave the product for more than 4 minutes in a warm oven, or more than 12 hours in a cold oven. Those upper limits matter as much as the dwell times — this is a caustic product and longer is not better.
Directions
- Check your oven instruction manual and the manufacturer's instructions before using this caustic-based product. It is not for self-cleaning, continuous cleaning or microwave ovens.
- Wear long rubber gloves and eye protection. Extinguish all pilot lights and make sure the oven is off.
- For the 4-minute power clean, heat the oven to no more than 90°C, then turn it off and apply the product. For a 30-minute clean, use it in a cold oven.
- Place a folded paper towel between the bottom of the oven drawer and the oven floor to catch possible seepage.
- Shake the can well before and during use. Spray liberally, starting with the roof and finishing with the door — but not on the door glass.
- Clean oven racks on a draining board, making sure the surfaces are well coated with foam.
- Close the door and let it stand: 4 minutes for a warm oven, 30 minutes for a cold one.
- Wipe clean with a damp cloth — a Selleys Super Cloth is ideal. Use a non-scratch scourer on stubborn sections.
- Make sure the oven is thoroughly rinsed before use. Do not light pilot lights or use the oven until cleaning is complete, and reheat and ventilate the oven before cooking in it again.
If product does get on the glass
Wipe it off immediately with a damp cloth or paper towel. Do not leave it to sit while you finish the rest of the oven — immediate is the instruction, and it is the difference between a wipe and a problem.
Cleaning the door glass properly
Use Hillmark Cerapol Ceramic Glass & Induction Cooktop Cleaner. It is formulated for ceramic glass and works well on oven door glass. Follow the directions on its own pack.
Doing the glass as a separate step with a separate product is not a compromise — it is the correct method. The enamel walls and the door glass are different surfaces with different requirements, and one product does not cover both.
