It is a no-fumes heavy duty oven cleaner in gel form, suitable for cleaning baked-on grease and grime from most oven surfaces and racks, and from heavily soiled cookware and bakeware. Its selling points are the heavy duty gel format, a fast power clean, no scrubbing required and no fumes.
What makes it different from the aerosol
If you cannot find the gel and are weighing up Selleys Oven Clean instead, the practical differences are these.
The gel is spread, not sprayed. It comes with a brush-head for spreading, or you can squeeze it onto a dry sponge and apply it that way. That makes it easier to keep the product on the surfaces you want and off the ones you do not — a real advantage given how long the exclusion list is.
It must be applied to warm surfaces. This is a stated requirement, not an optional speed-up. Preheat the oven to no more than 90°C, switch it off, open the door, and let it stand 10 minutes before applying. Do not overheat, as surfaces may be affected.
The standing time is 30 minutes, after which you wipe with a damp cloth — a Selleys Super Cloth is ideal — using a non-scratch scourer for stubborn sections, then rinse the surfaces thoroughly straight away.
It is rated for cookware and bakeware as well as the oven itself, which the aerosol is not positioned for in the same way.
How to use it
- Check your oven instruction manual before using this caustic-based product. It is not for self-cleaning or continuous cleaning ovens.
- Ensure the room is well ventilated. Shake well before use. Wear protective gloves and eye protection.
- Preheat the oven to no more than 90°C, switch off, open the door and allow it to stand for 10 minutes before applying to the warm surfaces.
- Apply a thin layer of gel by squeezing and spreading with the brush-head, or by squeezing onto a dry sponge and applying. Oven surfaces: remove the racks, then work back wall, side walls, floor, roof (using the sponge) and finally the door. Place folded paper towels between the bottom of the door and the oven floor, and close the door to prevent seepage.
- Racks: lay newspaper on the draining board, squeeze gel onto it, dab the bristles in the gel, hold the racks vertically and run the bristles along the bars. Put the racks back in the oven.
- Let it stand 30 minutes, then wipe with a damp cloth. Use a non-scratch scourer on stubborn sections, then rinse thoroughly straight away.
- Cookware and bakeware: rinse thoroughly to remove any residue, and wipe the surfaces dry immediately after rinsing. After cleaning carbon steel or cast iron, oil the surfaces to help prevent flash rusting.
The brush-head is for spreading the gel — it is not meant for scouring.
Limitations and safety
This is a corrosive product with a pH of about 13.5. It may produce severe burns. Do not swallow. Keep it out of reach of children, avoid contact with skin and eyes, wear protective gloves and eye protection, and beware of hot surfaces.
Do not use it on: pilot lights, electrical connections, switches, heating elements, thermostats, fans, rubber seals, exterior oven surfaces, benchtops, aluminium, copper, linoleum, painted surfaces, plastic, glass, galvanised steel, or damaged and scratched non-stick cookware and bakeware.
Store it in a cool, dry, well-ventilated place out of direct sunlight, and away from foodstuffs.
