How do you install bathroom accessories without drilling into tiles?

With Selleys Hold Up. It mounts toilet roll holders, towel racks and towel rings onto tile without screws, nails or clamps, it stays adjustable for up to 15 minutes so you can get a rail level, and it needs at least 48 hours to cure before anything is hung on it.

There is one qualifying condition, and it is worth checking in the shop rather than at home: the accessory must have a flush back, not an inset one. An adhesive fixing works entirely by surface contact. A holder with a recessed or contoured mounting plate barely touches the wall, and no adhesive makes up for missing contact area.

Step by step

1. Clean both surfaces. Make sure the surfaces are clean, free from grease, grit and grime. On a bathroom wall the invisible problem is soap film and cleaning product residue; give the tile a proper wipe and let it dry.
2. Cut the nozzle. Cut the Selleys Hold Up nozzle at the second line, on a 45 degree angle.
3. Apply the adhesive to the bathroom accessory you wish to install. Selleys' general direction for the tube is to cover one surface in long vertical strips.
4. Press it on. Press the accessory firmly against the wall in place, so the adhesive spreads into contact rather than sitting up as ridges.
5. Level it. If installing a towel rail or a similar accessory, use a spirit level to check placement — if it is out, simply adjust it. Hold Up is adjustable for up to 15 minutes.
6. Clean up immediately. Clean any excess adhesive with white spirits before the product cures.
7. Wait at least 48 hours until the product is fully cured before adding weight. Longer cure times will be needed in cold or dry conditions, or where both surfaces are non-porous.

The 48 hour rule, and why it is longer than 48 hours here

That last step carries the whole job. Hold Up's technical data sheet states a cure time of at least 48 hours and that the product must not be disturbed until cured.

The caveat in the guide is the part that gets overlooked: both surfaces in this job are non-porous. A glazed tile is non-porous, and a chromed or ceramic accessory back is non-porous. Hold Up cures by exposure to air and moisture, and a bond sandwiched between two sealed surfaces gets very little of either in the middle. In a cool bathroom in winter, treat three days as realistic rather than two.

The practical version of that advice: fit accessories at the start of a weekend, not the end of one, and do not test the bond by tugging on it. The published note is explicit — it must not be disturbed until cured.

Getting a towel rail level

A rail is harder than a single holder because two mounting plates have to be level with each other and at the same height, and because it carries real weight.

• Mark first, glue second. Pencil the position and check it with the level before any adhesive is opened. Fifteen minutes of adjustment time is generous for correcting a small error, not for redesigning the layout.
• Do one accessory at a time. The adjustment window is 15 minutes and the skin time is about 45 minutes. Mounting three items and then fine-tuning them all means the first one has skinned before you get back to it.
• Support it while it cures. Selleys recommends additional supports such as clamps during cure for heavy objects, overhead applications, and non-porous materials such as glass and metals. On a bathroom wall, a strip of masking tape across the rail, or a temporary prop underneath, does the same job.
• Check the load. Hold Up's published vertical hold is up to 240 kg/m² from the tube and 360 kg/m² from the cartridge. That is per square metre of bonded area — a small mounting plate presents only a fraction of that, so work out the real contact area before assuming a rail loaded with wet towels is covered.

Hold Up is heat, UV and water resistant, works indoors and outdoors, and bonds most materials: timber, concrete, MDF, particleboard, plasterboard, metals, some plastics, glass, masonry, tiles and ceramics.

Limitations — where not to use this method

• Not suitable for permanent water immersion. Water resistant covers splash and steam, not submersion.
• Not for some plastics — polyethylene, polypropylene and PTFE — or some rubbers. If the accessory back is an unmarked plastic, test on a scrap first.
• Must not be disturbed until cured (at least 48 hours).
• Heavy items, overhead work and non-porous pairings need temporary support during cure.
• Inset or contoured backs are not suitable. The accessory has to sit flush.
• Not the right fixing for a grab rail or anything relied upon for safety. That is a mechanical fixing job.
• Store below 30 °C in a cool dry place, and use within the 12 month shelf life.

What to expect if you want to remove it later

An adhesive fixing is permanent in practice. Cured Hold Up has to be cut and scraped off, and doing that on a glazed tile takes patience and a blade held flat to the surface. That is the honest trade for not drilling — the hole would have been permanent too, but the position of a glued accessory is harder to change than most people expect.
