What is Selleys Liquid Nails Fast Grab, and where should you use it?

Selleys Liquid Nails Fast Grab is a high strength, water-based construction adhesive built around strong initial hold. That initial hold is the whole point of the product: it grabs hard enough to hold a component in place straight away, which makes it suited to vertical jobs and to jobs where nails or fasteners cannot be used. The water-based formulation is low odour, which is why Selleys positions it as an indoor adhesive, and it cleans up with water while wet.

The one thing to understand before you choose it: Fast Grab is rated for interior and sheltered exterior applications protected from moisture only. It is not a weather-exposed adhesive. If the joint will get wet, or sit in prolonged moisture, this is the wrong product in the range.

What the key numbers mean in practice

The two strength figures describe two completely different moments in the job, and confusing them is the usual source of disappointment with a grab adhesive.

Up to 100 kg/m² instant grab is the holding power available the moment you press the part into place. It is measured on a timber-to-timber bond, so treat it as a best case for that combination. Spread over a square metre of contact it is generous; concentrated on the small contact patch of a heavy item, it is not. This is why the manufacturer still recommends supports for heavy items and overhead applications rather than relying on grab alone.

The TDS reports up to 500 tonnes/m² after seven days on timber and a separate tensile-shear result above 1.5 MPa. These figures do not establish an early-strength curve or a safe working load for a particular assembly.

The 72 hour cure time carries a caveat worth reading twice. Expect longer cure times in cold or humid weather and for less porous surfaces, and best results are obtained where one surface is porous. A water-based adhesive has to lose its water to cure, and it does that through a porous substrate. Bonding two sealed, non-porous faces together slows the whole process, which is also why the technical data sheet warns against use in tightly clamped joints such as cabinet making or joinery — clamping the joint shut leaves the water nowhere to go.

Bridges gaps up to 9mm means the adhesive keeps working across an uneven substrate. If a skirting board sits proud of a wavy wall by a few millimetres, the bead fills the void rather than leaving the board bridging fresh air. Beyond 9mm you are outside what the product is rated to fill.

Paintable after 12 hours is earlier than full cure, so any squeeze-out at a skirting or architrave joint can be painted the following day even though the bond is still developing underneath.

Where to use it

Liquid Nails Fast Grab is suitable for use on materials such as:

• Timber, MDF and particleboard
• Plasterboard
• Masonry and concrete

• Plastics and some rubbers — pre-test to determine compatibility
• Skirting, cornices and architraves
• Polystyrene foam

The page copy adds that the product is designed for faster job completion, reduces the need for clamping, is paintable when cured, and is made in Australia. It is one of several adhesives in the construction adhesives range, and it is the vertical-work option rather than the all-weather one.

How to apply it

1. Ensure surfaces are dry and free from oil, grease and dust. A water-based adhesive has no ability to cut through contamination.
2. Cut the cartridge tip, fit the nozzle and cut it to the desired opening (5mm), or cut the nozzle of the tube to the desired opening.
3. Apply a bead along the length of the joist, stud or batten. On broad flat surfaces, apply beads every 40 cm.
4. Bring the surfaces together as soon as possible — within the first 5 minutes. For heavy items or overhead applications, fix with sufficient nails, screws or clamping to hold the load and achieve contact over the total bond area.
5. Allow the adhesive to set for a minimum of 24 hours before removing any temporary fasteners or clamping. Use with mechanical fasteners in high stress applications.

The five-minute window in step 4 is the step people miss. Fast Grab begins developing its hold immediately, so a bead left open on the wall while you cut the next length of skirting has already started to skin over and will not achieve full contact when the board finally goes on.

Limitations — where Fast Grab should not be used

These are the manufacturer's stated limits. They define the product more usefully than the feature list does:

• Suitable for interior and sheltered exterior applications protected from moisture only.
• Not for use on mirrors. Use Liquid Nails Mirror & Metal instead.
• Not for metals heated by direct sunlight. Bonds weaken at higher temperatures — again, Liquid Nails Mirror & Metal is the nominated alternative.
• Not for use on polyethylene, polypropylene or PTFE. Pre-test other plastics and rubbers to determine compatibility.
• Do not use as the sole bonding agent for structural bonding.
• Avoid use in tightly clamped joints, for example cabinet making or joinery.
• Grab may be affected by substrate porosity and weather. Supports are recommended for heavy items and overhead applications.
• Expect longer cure times in cold or humid weather and on less porous surfaces.

The retail page uses broader moisture wording: not recommended for mirrors or areas exposed to prolonged moisture, not suitable for polyethylene, polypropylene or Teflon, and it must be fully cured before exposure to water. That does not override the TDS requirement to keep sheltered exterior joints protected from moisture.

Clean up and storage

Uncured product may be removed with water. Cured product can be removed by scraping or sanding. That difference is the practical argument for wiping joints as you go: while the adhesive is wet, a damp cloth is enough, and once it has cured you are into abrasives on a finished surface.

Store in a cool, dry place. Water-based products should not be allowed to freeze or to sit in a hot vehicle between jobs.

A water-based formulation and low odour do not mean the adhesive is hazard-free. Follow its own current SDS and label rather than ranking safety by the number of hazard statements.

The three isothiazolinones, each under 0.05%, are preservatives that stop the tub spoiling. They are also the entire reason for the classification: isothiazolinones are well-recognised skin sensitisers, and a fraction of a percent is enough.

Skin sensitisation is not irritation. Irritation settles once contact stops. Sensitisation is the immune system learning to react to the material: generally permanent once acquired, triggered thereafter by far smaller exposures, and worsening with each contact. It builds from repeated casual contact rather than one dramatic exposure, which is why gloves matter on every job and not just the big ones.

Where the job allows either, choosing Fast Grab over a solvent-based construction adhesive removes the flammability and the narcotic-effects hazard entirely — which matters most in exactly the places construction adhesive gets used: subfloors, wall cavities and roof spaces.

Protection

• Gloves — nitrile rubber for intermittent contact.

How long before I can remove clamps or temporary fasteners?

A minimum of 24 hours. That is the set time, not the full cure — the cure time is 72 hours, and longer again in cold or humid weather or on less porous surfaces.

How long does it take to reach full strength?

The technical data sheet gives a cure time of 72 hours, and states that the adhesive holds up to 500 tonnes/m² after 7 days on a timber-to-timber bond.

Can I paint over it?

Can I use it outside?
