How do you turn an old mirror into a framed statement piece?

An old mirror destined for the scrap heap can be reframed and decorated in an afternoon of work plus three days of curing. The sequence is: clean the glass, check the frame fits, prepare and paint the frame, bond the mirror into it, then add any decoration.

Two adhesives do the work, and they are not interchangeable. Selleys Liquid Nails Mirror & Metal bonds the mirror to the frame — it is formulated for mirrors specifically and will not discolour them. Selleys Power Grip sticks mosaic tiles or other decoration onto the frame.

Step 1 — Clean the mirror

Wipe the mirror with Complete Clean Bathroom & Shower Wipes. Wait five minutes, then rinse it thoroughly with water.

Both parts matter. The five minutes is dwell time — the product needs contact time to lift soap scum. The rinse is what stops cleaner residue sitting on the glass, and it also matters at the edges, where the adhesive is about to go.

Step 2 — Check the frame fits

Measure the frame and make sure it can take the mirror. Dry-fit it before any adhesive is opened. Liquid Nails Mirror & Metal is not re-positionable, so a mirror placed slightly out of square stays slightly out of square.

Step 3 — Prepare and paint the frame first

Sand the frame down and clean it with Selleys Sugar Soap to remove excess dust. When it is dry, paint it in the colour of your choice.

Do this before you bond the mirror in, not after. The technical data sheet for Liquid Nails Mirror & Metal is explicit that mirrors should not be fixed directly to unpainted timber, plaster, concrete or brick — these surfaces should be painted to prevent potential damage to mirrors. Raw timber holds and releases moisture, and that is what attacks a mirror's silvered backing from behind.

The same data sheet adds a timing requirement: freshly painted surfaces should be allowed to dry for at least 7 days before the job is done, painted surfaces should not be flaky or peeling, and compatibility should be tested on painted surfaces before use.

So the realistic project plan is: sand, clean, paint, wait a week, then bond. If you are working to a deadline, paint the frame first and do everything else the following weekend.

Sugar Soap is a professional strength cleaner recommended for cleaning surfaces prior to painting. Dilute it as directed on the pack. Note that it has a pH of approximately 11 and causes serious eye irritation — keep it away from eyes, wash your hands after use, and wear rubber gloves if you have sensitive skin.

Step 4 — Bond the mirror into the frame

Attach the mirror to the frame with Selleys Liquid Nails Mirror & Metal. For mirrors up to 6 mm thick, apply strips or beads of the adhesive approximately 8 cm apart. Do not apply adhesive over vinyl backing, and make sure the surfaces are dry before applying. Press the frame onto the mirror, and support it with clamps for 72 hours.

The technical data sheet fills in the detail that makes the difference:

• Strips or beads, never blobs or dollops. A dollop concentrates stress on one spot of the backing.
• Not within 5 cm of the mirror's edge, as this may affect product performance or cause discolouration.
• The strips must not spread into or touch one another when pressed. A gap must remain between them — that gap is the air path the adhesive needs to cure.
• Place the mirror within 5 minutes, before the adhesive skins.
• For vinyl backed mirrors, apply adhesive inside the vinyl cut-outs and not over the vinyl.
• Glue lines may be visible through surfaces that are not perfectly opaque.

Why 72 hours of clamping is not negotiable

The adhesive cures at 2 mm per day and it needs air to do it. That is the reason for the 8 cm spacing, the gaps between strips, and the 72 hour support period — the bond develops strength slowly from the edges of each strip inwards. Clamping is not holding the mirror while the glue "dries"; it is holding it for three days while a slow chemical reaction works its way through.

It is also why the data sheet warns against totally enclosed bonds: adhesive with no air access does not cure at all.

Step 5 — Add the decoration

Add mosaic tiles to the frame. Apply Selleys Power Grip to one surface and hold the tiles in place until the glue sets, usually around three minutes. If necessary, tape them down until they are fully dry.

Power Grip's published setting time is 3 minutes, with an initial bond time of 12 hours. Three minutes is when it holds itself; twelve hours is when it has real strength. For porous surfaces such as wood and ceramics, practical strength is usually achieved within 12 hours — allow longer for non-porous surfaces such as metals and plastics. A useful trick from the data sheet: to reduce set times on non-porous surfaces, keep the surfaces apart for 30 seconds before bringing them together.

Power Grip sticks to metals, wood, ceramic, stone, brick, concrete, masonry, glass, foam, leather, laminate, fibreglass, vinyl, fabric, cardboards and most plastics. It is high strength, flexible, shock and impact resistant, water and weatherproof, and paintable.

Limitations to know before you start

• Liquid Nails Mirror & Metal cannot be painted over, is not for permanent water immersion, is not for repairing broken glass, is not re-positionable, must not be used as the sole bonding agent for structural bonding, and is not suitable for totally enclosed bonds because it needs air to cure.
• Do not fix a mirror directly to unpainted timber, plaster, concrete or brick.
• Allow at least 7 days after painting the frame before bonding.
• Power Grip is not for polyethylene or polypropylene plastics, is not for permanent water immersion, and will yellow on direct exposure to UV. Keep that last point in mind if the finished mirror will sit in direct sunlight — the glue lines between mosaic tiles are the part that would show it.
• Sugar Soap should be wiped off aluminium and brass immediately, rinsed well from glass before it dries, and tested in an inconspicuous area for compatibility and colourfastness on anything unusual.

Common questions about refreshing a mirror

Which adhesive bonds the mirror?

Selleys Liquid Nails Mirror & Metal. It is formulated specifically for mirrors and will not discolour them.

Why not use ordinary construction adhesive or a general silicone?

Because the wrong adhesive attacks a mirror's silvered backing, which is what causes the black spotting and fading you see on old bathroom mirrors. That damage is not reversible.

How far apart do the adhesive strips go?

Approximately 8 cm apart, for mirrors up to 6 mm thick, and no closer than 5 cm from the mirror's edge. The strips must not touch one another when pressed.

How long do I clamp it?

72 hours.

Should I paint the frame before or after fitting the mirror?

Before. Mirrors should not be fixed directly to unpainted timber, and freshly painted surfaces need at least 7 days to dry before the job is done.

What if my mirror has a vinyl backing?

Do not apply adhesive over the vinyl. Apply it inside the vinyl cut-outs instead.

How quickly do I have to position the mirror?

How long do the mosaic tiles need to be held?

Can I paint over the finished frame?

Will this work for a bathroom mirror that gets steamy?

Both products are water resistant but neither is suitable for permanent water immersion, and Liquid Nails Mirror & Metal is heat and steam resistant with a service range of −60 °C to 150 °C. Steam is within their range; submersion is not.

My existing mirror has black spots — can I save it?
