Manufacturer source check
The TDS v3.0, 16 November 2020 identifies a translucent product curing at about 2 mm/day; the retail page says white and seven days to full strength. These are unresolved source differences, not interchangeable specifications. Confirm the supplied cartridge where colour or timing matters. Supporting the mirror (normally 72 hours) and leaving its perimeter unsealed (at least a week) are separate instructions.
What is Selleys Liquid Nails Mirror & Metal, and where should you use it?
Selleys Liquid Nails Mirror & Metal — titled Liquid Nails Mirror & Metal on its technical data sheet — is a premium grade, high strength neutral cure silicone construction adhesive that delivers strong bonds on mirrors, metal and glass. The reason it exists as a separate product is chemistry rather than strength: it is non-corrosive and will not discolour mirrors, so it can be used against a mirror's silvered backing where an ordinary construction adhesive or an acetic silicone would attack it.
The other half of its brief is temperature and weather. It is rated from -60 °C to 150 °C with high UV resistance, and it is heat and steam resistant, which is why it is nominated both for bathroom fixtures and for metal fixed to exterior walls. Before you buy it, note one hard limitation: it cannot be painted over, and it is not re-positionable — once the mirror touches the wall, that is where it lives.

Indicative data only, not intended for the preparation of specifications. The product page gives a full strength figure of 7 days.
What the key numbers mean in practice
A cure time of 2mm per day is the single most important number for a mirror job, and it explains almost every instruction in the application method. Silicone cures by reaction with air, working inward from the exposed edges of each bead. A strip of adhesive 8 cm from its neighbours has air on both sides and cures from both sides; a wide smear of adhesive sealed between glass and wall has almost no exposed edge and may never cure properly. That is why the data sheet says the product is not suitable for totally enclosed bonds — the adhesive requires air to cure, why beads must not touch one another, and why you should not seal around the edges of the mirror for at least a week.
Support with clips or tape until the adhesive develops strength, normally 72 hours. This is the figure that matters on the day. Three days of mechanical support on a heavy mirror is not optional — the adhesive at that point has cured only a few millimetres in from each edge of each bead.
Skin time of 10–15 minutes, tack free at 45 minutes, and a 5-minute window to place the mirror. The 5-minute figure is the operative one. Skin time tells you when a film forms; the placement instruction is deliberately tighter so that both faces are wetted by fully live adhesive. Because the product is not re-positionable, plan the position before the adhesive goes on: mark the wall, set your clips, then apply.
-60 °C to 150 °C is a wide service range that covers a steel letterbox in full summer sun and a bathroom fitting exposed to steam. It is a service range, not a curing range.
Where to use it
The data sheet nominates it for:
- Adhering mirrors to walls
- Metal letterboxes to external walls
- House numbers to exterior walls
- Bathroom fixtures to tiles
- Tool holders on metal shed walls
Suitable materials include metals — aluminium, copper, brass and sheet metal — as well as mirrors and glass. It has good gap filling on uneven surfaces and excellent adhesion to smooth, non-porous surfaces, which is the combination most other construction adhesives struggle with. Liquid Nails Fast Grab names this product as the alternative for mirrors and for metals heated by direct sunlight, both of which are outside its own scope.
How to apply it
Surface preparation
Ensure the surface is sound, dry and free from oil, grease and dust. Cut the cartridge, fit the nozzle and cut it to size — approximately 5mm — then apply using a caulking gun.
Mirrors
- For mirrors up to 6mm thick, apply strips or beads of adhesive approximately 8 cm apart. Do not apply the adhesive as blobs or dollops, over vinyl backing, or within 5 cm of the mirror's edge — any of these may affect performance or cause discoloration.
- When the mirror is pressed onto the wall, the strips of adhesive must not spread into or touch one another. A gap must remain between them.
- Immediately after applying the adhesive, place the mirror against the wall before the adhesive skins — within 5 minutes.
- Support the mirror with clips or tape until the adhesive develops strength, normally 72 hours.
- Do not seal around the edges of the mirror for at least a week, to allow air circulation.
- Mirrors should not be fixed directly to unpainted timber, plaster, concrete or brick walls. These surfaces should be painted to prevent potential damage to mirrors.
The product page adds that when bonding mirrors the adhesive must be applied to one surface only — vertical beads to the back of the mirror — and that you should not cover the adhesive with tape or sealants until it is fully cured.
General application
- Apply as for mirrors and press the surfaces together immediately.
- Leave squeeze-out to cure and then trim it, avoiding cutting into the bond.
- Support the bond until the adhesive cures sufficiently, normally 72 hours.
Working over painted and vinyl-backed surfaces
- Painted surfaces should not be flaky or peeling.
- Freshly painted surfaces should be allowed to dry for at least 7 days before the job is done.
- Test compatibility on painted surfaces before using.
- For vinyl backed mirrors, apply the adhesive inside the vinyl cut-outs and not over the vinyl.
- Glue lines may be visible through surfaces that are not perfectly opaque — worth considering before you bond anything translucent.
Limitations — where Mirror & Metal should not be used
- Not for permanent water immersion. The product page also states it is not suitable for aquariums or below-waterline applications.
- Not for repairing broken glass.
- Cannot be painted over.
- Do not use as the sole bonding agent for structural bonding.
- Not suitable for totally enclosed bonds — the adhesive requires air to cure.
- Not re-positionable.
- Not suitable for polyethylene, polypropylene or Teflon (product page).
Clean up
Uncured product may be removed with mineral turps. Cured product can be removed with Selleys Sealant Remover, or by mechanical action. On a mirror job, note that squeeze-out is meant to be left to cure and trimmed rather than wiped — wiping wet silicone across the face of a mirror spreads a haze that is harder to deal with than a cured ridge.
Hazard classification
Classified as hazardous under Safe Work Australia GHS 7, with the signal word Warning.
- Sensitisation, skin — Category 1. H317: may cause an allergic skin reaction.
- Eye damage/irritation — Category 2A. H319: causes serious eye irritation.
Liquid Nails Mirror & Metal is not classified as Dangerous Goods under the Australian Code for the Transport of Dangerous Goods by Road & Rail, New Zealand NZS5433, the IMDG Code for sea transport or the IATA regulations for air transport.
What is in it
| Chemical entity | CAS number | Proportion (w/w) |
|---|---|---|
| 2-Butanone, O,O',O"-(methylsilylidyne)trioxime | 22984-54-9 | 1–10% |
| 2-Butanone, O,O',O"-(ethenylsilylidyne)trioxime | 2224-33-1 | 1–10% |
| Cyclotetrasiloxane, octamethyl- | 556-67-2 | <1% |
| Methyl ethyl ketoxime | 96-29-7 | <1% |
| N-[3-(Trimethoxysilyl)propyl]ethylenediamine | 1760-24-3 | <1% |
| Non-hazardous or below reporting limits | — | Balance |
The two trioxime silanes at the top of the table are the reason this product exists in the form it does, and they connect directly to the instructions above. They are the crosslinkers: they react with moisture from the air and, as they do, release methyl ethyl ketoxime. That is what "neutral cure" means here — the by-product is a ketoxime rather than the acetic acid an ordinary bathroom silicone gives off. Acetic acid is what attacks a mirror's silvered backing and corrodes metal, so the chemistry that makes this adhesive safe on a mirror is the same chemistry that produces the smell.
That also explains the page's most counter-intuitive instruction. The adhesive needs air to cure, beads must not touch one another, and the mirror's perimeter must not be sealed for at least a week. The air path is not only how moisture gets in; it is also how the ketoxime gets out. Sealing the edge early traps a curing bead behind glass with nowhere to vent, which is why a totally enclosed bond is explicitly unsupported.
H317 is the hazard that matters for anyone who fits mirrors regularly. Skin sensitisation is not irritation. It is the immune system learning to react to a substance; once acquired it is generally permanent, and thereafter much smaller exposures trigger it. It develops from repeated casual contact rather than one heavy exposure — a fingertip on a bead while positioning glass, a nozzle wiped by hand, day after day. Gloves are the control, and on this product they also keep fingerprints off the back of the mirror.
Octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane (D4) is declared at under 1%. It is a cyclic siloxane residue common to silicone products, and at this level the product carries no classification arising from it.
Ventilation deserves a mention that the classification list does not force. A bathroom mirror is the archetypal job for this adhesive, and a bathroom is a small room with the door shut. The cure runs at about 2 mm per day and the ketoxime comes off for as long as it runs, so leave the extractor fan on or the window open for the first few days rather than only while you are working.
Protection
- Gloves — nitrile rubber is indicated for intermittent contact; make your own final assessment for your conditions and glove construction. This is the main control against the sensitisation hazard.
- Eye protection — safety glasses, particularly when gunning beads onto the back of a mirror held vertically.
- Clothing — overalls and safety shoes. Wash contaminated clothing and protective equipment before storing or reusing.
- Ventilation — keep the room ventilated during application and while the adhesive cures.
- Wash hands before eating, drinking, smoking or using the toilet.
First aid
| Exposure | What to do |
|---|---|
| Eyes | Hold the eyelids apart and flush continuously with running water — until told to stop by the Poisons Information Centre or a doctor, or for at least 15 minutes — then go to a doctor or hospital immediately. |
| Skin | Effects may be delayed. Remove contaminated clothing and flush skin and hair thoroughly with running water. If swelling, redness, blistering or irritation occurs, seek medical assistance promptly. |
| Inhalation | Move the person to fresh air without becoming a casualty yourself. Loosen tight clothing, let them rest comfortably and keep them warm until fully recovered. Seek medical advice if effects persist. |
| Swallowed | Rinse the mouth with water. Do NOT induce vomiting. Give a glass of water. Never give anything by mouth to an unconscious person. Seek medical advice. |

Common questions about Liquid Nails Mirror & Metal
Will it damage the mirror backing?
No. It is a neutral cure, non-corrosive silicone that will not discolour mirrors, which is the reason to use it rather than a general construction adhesive.
How long do I need to hold the mirror in place?
Support it with clips or tape until the adhesive develops strength — normally 72 hours. The product page gives 7 days for full strength.
Can I apply it in dollops like a general adhesive?
No. Apply strips or beads approximately 8 cm apart. Blobs or dollops may affect product performance or cause discoloration, and the beads must not touch each other once the mirror is pressed on.
Why must the beads not touch?
The adhesive needs air to cure. Beads that merge into a continuous sealed layer have no exposed edge, and the product is explicitly not suitable for totally enclosed bonds.
Can I silicone around the edge of the mirror once it is up?
Not for at least a week. Sealing the perimeter earlier cuts off the air circulation the adhesive needs to cure.
Can I reposition the mirror after pressing it on?
No. The product is not re-positionable. Set your marks and supports before the adhesive goes on.
Can I stick a mirror straight onto a brick or plaster wall?
No. Mirrors should not be fixed directly to unpainted timber, plaster, concrete or brick. Paint those surfaces first to prevent potential damage to the mirror.
What if the wall was painted recently?
Allow freshly painted surfaces to dry for at least 7 days before doing the job, make sure the paint is not flaky or peeling, and test compatibility on the painted surface first.
What about a vinyl-backed mirror?
Apply the adhesive inside the vinyl cut-outs, not over the vinyl.
Can I paint over the adhesive?
No. It cannot be painted over.
Can I use it outdoors, or in a bathroom?
Yes to both. It is heat and steam resistant, has high UV resistance, and is rated from -60 °C to 150 °C, suitable for both inside and outside the home. It is not for permanent water immersion.
Will the glue lines show through?
They may, on any surface that is not perfectly opaque. Consider bead placement before bonding translucent material.
