The one thing that changes the result more than the product you pick is temperature. Grease is easier to remove when the oven is slightly warm, and the caustic-based cleaners are formulated to be applied to warm surfaces. Working on a stone-cold oven is the most common reason a cleaner appears not to work.

Selleys Oven Wipes — everyday spills

Oven Wipes combine tough cleaning nodules with a cleaning formulation, so the nodules loosen burnt-on food while the cloth traps and absorbs the grease and spills you lift. Selleys describes them as food safe for cleaning surfaces that come into contact with food. They are the right choice for cleaning up cooking spills before they become baked on.

Their limit is real, though: wipes will not remove heavy carbonised residue. Use them on the inside of the oven and microwave — not on plastic, dial marks or printing, painted surfaces, or glass oven and microwave doors. For stubborn patches, step up to Oven Clean or the Heavy Duty Gel.

Oven Clean is a heavy-duty formula that cuts through baked-on grease and grime quickly and without scrubbing. Applied to a warm oven, it delivers a four-minute power clean.

Selleys Oven Plus Heavy Duty Gel — long-term stubborn stains

The gel is a no-fumes, heavy duty cleaner with a purpose-designed applicator that spreads it across oven walls, floors and racks. It also handles cookware and bakeware with long-term stains. There is no scrubbing required, and it comes as a 400g plastic bottle.

How to use Selleys Oven Plus Heavy Duty Gel

This is the most involved of the three, and its technical data sheet gives the sequence in detail. Check your oven's instruction manual first — this is a caustic-based product, and it is not for self-cleaning or continuous cleaning ovens.

1. Ensure the room is well ventilated, and wear protective gloves and eye protection.
2. Shake the bottle well before use.
3. Preheat the oven to no more than 90°C. Do not overheat it — surfaces may be affected. Switch the oven off, open the door and let it stand for 10 minutes before applying product to the warm surfaces.
4. Apply by squeezing and spreading with the brush-head, or by squeezing onto a dry sponge and applying with that. Spread a thin layer of gel.
5. For the oven cavity: remove the racks. Apply to the back wall, then the side walls, then the floor. Apply to the roof by squeezing gel onto a dry sponge and applying it that way. Finish with the door. Place folded paper towels between the bottom of the door and the oven floor, then close the door to prevent seepage.
6. For the racks: lay newspaper on the draining board, squeeze gel onto the newspaper and dab the bristles in it. Hold the racks vertically on the draining board and apply by running the bristles along the bars. Place the racks back in the oven.
7. Let the gel stand for 30 minutes.
8. Wipe with a damp cloth — a Selleys Super Cloth is ideal. Use a non-scratch scourer for stubborn sections, then rinse the surfaces thoroughly straight away.
9. For cookware and bakeware, wipe the surfaces dry immediately after rinsing. After cleaning carbon steel or cast iron, oil the surfaces to help prevent flash rusting.

What the numbers mean in practice

The 90°C ceiling is not arbitrary. The gel needs a warm surface to work, but a hot one can damage oven finishes — hence preheat, switch off, then wait 10 minutes so the metal is warm rather than hot when the product goes on.

The 30-minute dwell is where the work actually happens. Wiping early is why people end up scrubbing a product that is marketed as no-scrub. Let it sit.

The gel has a pH of 13.5 ± 0.5 — strongly alkaline. That is why it lifts carbonised fat so effectively, and equally why it is corrosive, why gloves and eye protection are not optional, and why thorough rinsing of anything you will cook in or on matters.

Limitations — where oven cleaner should NOT go

Selleys Oven Plus Heavy Duty Gel must not be used on: pilot lights, electrical connections, switches, heating elements, thermostats, fans, rubber seals, exterior oven surfaces, benchtops, aluminium, copper, linoleum, painted surfaces, plastic, glass, galvanised steel, or damaged and scratched non-stick cookware and bakeware. It is also not for self-cleaning or continuous cleaning ovens.

Selleys Oven Clean carries a similar list: not for self-cleaning or continuous cleaning ovens, microwave ovens, glass oven doors, pilot lights, electrical connections, switches, heating elements, fan grills or blades, thermostats, rubber seals, exterior oven surfaces, benchtops, aluminium, copper, linoleum, painted surfaces, plastic, chrome, galvanised steel, or damaged or scratched non-stick surfaces. Ensure all pilot lights are extinguished before use, and do not light them or use the oven until cleaning is finished. Reheat and ventilate the oven before cooking in it again.

Selleys Oven Wipes are not for plastic, dial marks, signs or prints, painted surfaces, or glass doors, and they will not shift heavy carbonised residue.

The recurring theme is worth stating plainly: anything electrical, anything rubber, anything painted, and anything aluminium or copper is off limits. The reason is that these cleaners are caustic; they attack the fat, and they will attack soft metals and coatings just as willingly.

Storage and safety

Store oven cleaners in a cool, dry, well-ventilated place out of direct sunlight, and away from foodstuffs. Do not swallow, keep out of reach of children, avoid contact with skin and eyes, and wear protective gloves and eye protection. The Heavy Duty Gel is corrosive and may produce severe burns. Beware of hot surfaces while you work.
