What is PVA glue, and which Selleys PVA should you use?

PVA — polyvinyl acetate — is the most common adhesive family in the world, and "PVA glue" is more of a catch-all category name than a single product. It turns up as wood glue, craft glue and plain white glue, in strengths ranging from something a child can use on paper to an industrial-grade woodworking adhesive.

What unites them is how they work. PVA glues bond best to permeable, porous materials — timber, wood products, leather — because the glue soaks into the surface before it dries. The bond is partly mechanical, keyed into the material's own structure, which is why the same glue that holds two pieces of pine together will slide straight off glass.

Standard PVA glues live in most homes and bind paper or cardboard. Stronger PVAs are used in woodworking and carpentry, formulated to be absorbed by and bond with porous materials.

The characteristics that decide where PVA suits

Water-soluble. Most PVA glues are water-soluble, which makes them excellent for craft work and easy to clean up. If a project needs the glue diluted or applied in thin layers — papier mâché, for instance — that is straightforward. The flipside is direct: water solubility means the product is not necessarily moisture or water resistant. That single property is the reason there are separate interior and exterior PVAs.

Semi-rigid when dry. PVA glues provide some flexibility and movement when cured, which suits joinery, cabinets and craft projects where a completely brittle joint would fail.

Sandable and paintable. Many PVA-based glues are suitable for interior woodworking because they can be sanded and painted over.

Aquadhere Interior

Selleys Aquadhere Interior is a high quality PVA wood glue for use around the home and on DIY projects. It suits softwoods, hardwood, MDF and particleboard, dries clear and does not stain wood, and cleans up easily with water.

Its limits are exactly what its name says: it is not waterproof, and it is unsuitable for structural or exterior applications. If the piece will ever get wet, this is not the glue.

Aquadhere Exterior

Selleys Aquadhere Exterior is an industrial-grade polyaliphatic cross-linking PVA developed for professional woodworkers and craftsmen. It produces bonds stronger than most woods and is weatherproof, which makes it the choice for exterior projects.

Aquadhere Quick Set

Selleys Aquadhere Quick Set is a fast-setting PVA wood glue for small repairs and projects, in 250mL and 500mL. Like Aquadhere Interior, it is not water resistant and is not suitable for exterior or structural applications.

Aquadhere Durabond

Aquadhere Durabond sits in the same range but is not a PVA — it is a solvent-free, moisture-curing polyurethane. That distinction matters, because its properties are different: it bonds wood to almost anything including metal, ceramics, glass, masonry and most plastics, it is heat resistant to 140°C, it is acid and chemical resistant, and it expands and foams as it cures so it can be used for gap filling. Clamp firmly for approximately 4 hours; maximum strength comes at up to 24 hours depending on humidity and material porosity.

What the clamp times actually mean

The 30-minute and one-hour clamp times for Aquadhere Exterior are the minimum period the joint needs to be held rigid. They are not when the joint is finished. Do not stress the joint for 24 hours, and note that maximum strength takes 24 hours — longer in cold, damp conditions or with dense timbers.

The practical reading: you can unclamp a softwood frame after half an hour and move it carefully, but do not hang anything from it, sand it aggressively or put it into service until the next day. Longer clamping times may be required for joints under high stress.

The 5 m² per litre coverage figure gives you a way to size the bottle. A 500mL bottle covers roughly 2.5 m² of glued surface — plenty for a chopping board or a set of dowel joints, marginal for a laminating job across a large panel.

Application and technique

1. Make sure the surfaces to be bonded are close fitting, dry and clean.
2. Shake the bottle before use.
3. Apply the adhesive liberally to one surface only.
4. Clamp for 30 minutes for softwoods, one hour for hardwoods. Do not stress the joint for 24 hours.
5. Wipe off excess adhesive with a damp cloth while it is still wet.
6. Maximum strength is attained in 24 hours, longer in cold, damp conditions or with dense timbers.

Two useful tips: Aquadhere can be mixed with sawdust to fill small gaps, and a tighter clamp gives a better bond. Ensure the surface is dry before applying the product.

Limitations — where PVA should NOT be used

• Aquadhere Interior and Quick Set — not waterproof, not water resistant, and not suitable for exterior or structural applications.
• Aquadhere Exterior — not recommended for joints subjected to constant high stress, and not suitable for below-waterline applications or continuous submersion.
• Iron and steel contamination. Avoid contaminating Aquadhere Exterior with iron and steel — nails, for example. It will stain brown or black if contaminated with rust (iron oxide), or in the presence of the tannins found in many woods. This catches people out on oak and other tannin-rich timbers.
• Non-porous surfaces. PVA relies on absorption into a porous surface. Glass, metal and most plastics are the wrong substrate for it — an epoxy or a construction adhesive is the right family there.
• Structural work. Neither the interior nor the exterior product is intended for structural bonding.

Clean up and storage

Uncured PVA comes off with water. Cured product has to be sanded or scraped. Wipe the nozzle and seal the bottle tightly, and store it in a dry place.

Safety: the one in this range that is not a PVA is also the only classified one

This page already makes the chemistry distinction that matters. Aquadhere Durabond sits in the Aquadhere range but is a moisture-curing polyurethane, not a PVA. The hazard classification follows the chemistry exactly.

The PVAs are unremarkable. Aquadhere Interior and Aquadhere Exterior are not classified as hazardous under GHS 7 at all — no signal word, no hazard statements. Quick Set is Warning with H317 (may cause an allergic skin reaction) alone.

Durabond is a different document. Signal word Danger, with H334 (may cause allergy or asthma symptoms or breathing difficulties if inhaled, respiratory sensitisation Category 1A), H317 (skin sensitisation, Category 1A), H351 (suspected of causing cancer — suspected, not established), H373 (may cause damage to organs through prolonged or repeated exposure), plus H332, H335, H315 and H319.

What that means for a glue-up. H334 is a permanent change, not an irritation that passes: once the response is acquired, much smaller exposures set it off afterwards. And Durabond does not stop emitting when you stop applying — it is moisture-curing, it foams as it cures, and its own guidance is to ventilate during application and while the joint cures. This page's figures are a 4-hour clamp and up to 24 hours to maximum strength. A closed garage or a shed with the roller door down for that period is the exposure, not the two minutes you spent brushing it on.

H317 at Category 1A is built up by exactly the habit this page describes elsewhere — wiping squeeze-out and handling wet glue lines bare-handed, job after job. Nitrile gloves, and wash your hands after you take them off. Safety glasses for H319. And because cured Durabond has to be chiselled or sanded off, wear a dust mask for that step.

The lower-hazard choice is usually available. Where the job is timber to timber and you need weatherproofing rather than the ability to bond metal, glass or masonry, Aquadhere Exterior does it with no classification at all. Reach for Durabond when you actually need what only Durabond does.

Common questions about PVA glue

Is PVA glue waterproof?

Not inherently. PVA is water-soluble, which is what makes it easy to clean up and also what limits its moisture resistance. Aquadhere Interior and Quick Set are not water resistant. Aquadhere Exterior is a cross-linking PVA that is weatherproof, though still not for continuous submersion.

What is the difference between Aquadhere Interior and Exterior?

Interior is a standard PVA for indoor work — not waterproof, not for structural or exterior use. Exterior is an industrial-grade polyaliphatic cross-linking PVA that is weatherproof and suitable for exterior use in non-structural applications.
