Do you need to rinse sugar soap off before painting?

Not if you are repainting. Selleys Sugar Soap does not need to be rinsed off a previously painted plasterboard wall you are about to repaint — the technical data sheet says so directly for wall cleaning: no need to rinse. It is still good practice to wipe over each area as you go with a clean damp cloth, particularly if the surface was badly soiled with nicotine stains, heavy grease or a thick dirt build-up.

Two things change that answer, and both are worth reading before you start.

If you are cleaning without painting afterwards, always rinse. Sugar soap should be rinsed off whenever you are using it for general cleaning on a surface you are not about to paint.

And you must wipe Selleys Sugar Soap off aluminium and brass surfaces immediately. This is a stated limitation on the product, not a suggestion. Window frames, door furniture, tap ware and light fittings are all easy to catch with a mop or a wet cloth while you are cleaning a wall.

Why the rule differs between repainting and general cleaning

Sugar soap is an alkaline cleaner — the technical data sheet gives its pH as approximately 11 — and it works by cutting through grease and grime rather than by leaving a film. Where you are repainting, a trace of the cleaner is not an obstacle to paint adhesion, and the new paint film covers it. Where the surface stays exposed, that same residue sits on the surface indefinitely, keeps working on whatever it is in contact with, and attracts dirt.

That is also why the rinse rule is absolute on certain materials. On glass, the residue becomes hard to remove once it dries, so glass has to be rinsed before the product dries. On aluminium and brass, the alkalinity itself is the problem, which is why the instruction is to wipe off immediately rather than merely to rinse later.

The one step people skip: let the wall dry

Whether you rinse or not, the wall has to be completely dry before paint goes on. This is the more common failure than any residue question. Paint applied over a wall that still holds washing moisture can lose adhesion, blister, or take far longer to cure than expected. Give the room ventilation and give the wall time — longer in cold or humid weather.

How to use it for paint preparation

1. Dilute to suit the job. For Selleys Original Sugar Soap, most jobs take half a cup into half a bucket — about 5 litres — of water. For the more concentrated Original Sugar Soap Super Concentrate, it is half a cup into a full 10 litre bucket.
2. Use a mop or cloth to clean the area.
3. For stubborn or in-ground marks, use the product neat with a non-scratch scouring sponge or cloth.
4. On heavily soiled areas — nicotine, heavy grease, thick dirt — wipe over with a clean damp cloth as you go.
5. Wipe it off aluminium and brass immediately, and rinse it well from glass before it dries.
6. Let the wall dry completely, then paint.
