Two figures worth flagging. Selleys' technical data sheet for No Mould states the semi-cured sealant must not be touched until fully cured, "at least 48 hours"; some Selleys advice quotes 72 hours for the same product — the technical data sheet figure is 48. For Wet Area Silicone, the 24-hour figure is Selleys' guidance for using the shower; the product's technical data sheet separately states the sealant cures in 72 hours and should not be subjected to water immersion until fully cured. Showering at 24 hours is running water on a skinned bead, which is what that answer covers.
Why an hour is enough for one and a day for the other
Both products cure by reacting with moisture in the air, and both form a surface skin long before the bead is rubber all the way through. No Mould is formulated with Speed Seal technology specifically to produce a shower-ready seal in an hour — that is the headline feature of the product. Wet Area Silicone is a neutral cure silicone with no such fast-skin claim, so Selleys gives it a full day.
In both cases the number describes the skin. The skin is what makes the joint watertight and keeps shower water out of the wall. What it does not give you is strength: underneath, the bead is still soft, and it stays that way until the reaction has worked its way through the depth of silicone sitting in the joint.
The condition attached to both answers
"Provided it is not disturbed by touching" is doing real work in these answers, and it is the part people skip.
An uncured bead with a skin over it behaves like a sausage. Press it, wipe it, or lean the shower screen against it, and the skin splits and soft silicone squeezes out. It does not heal. What you are left with is a break in the seal at exactly the point that took the load — and you will not see it from the front until water starts appearing somewhere it should not.
For the whole cure window, that means: no cleaning the tiles around it, no re-tooling to tidy a bit you were not happy with, no testing it with a fingernail, and no putting weight on any fixture the bead is bedding in place. Showering after the stated time is fine; touching is not.
Doing the job so the 24 hours actually counts
- Clean the joint with turps and let it dry completely. Both products call for surfaces that are clean, dry and free of dirt, grease, oil and water. A shower corner holds moisture long after it looks dry — ventilate it and give it time.

- Cut the nozzle at 45 degrees and size it to the joint.
- Apply with steady pressure, pushing the sealant into the joint rather than laying it on the surface.

- Clean up with turps before the product skins.
- Then leave it alone for the stated period.
What will not make it faster
These silicones need atmospheric moisture to cure. A hair dryer or fan heater blows warm dry air across the bead, which does not shorten the cure and can hinder it. Ordinary ventilation at room humidity is what helps. If the bathroom has an exhaust fan, running it is fine — you want air movement, not heat.
Limitations worth knowing
- Neither product is for permanent water immersion. A shower recess is fine; a submerged joint is not.
- Neither is suitable for aquariums, or for food or drinking water contact.
- Neither is paintable. Complete painting seven days before sealing.
- No Mould is not suitable for metals other than aluminium and stainless steel, and neither product suits PE, PP or PTFE plastics.
- To keep the seal performing, clean soap scum and dirt off regularly — that residue is what feeds mould growth on the bead, and No Mould's mould resistance is stated on the condition that it is kept clean.

What happens if someone uses the shower early?
On an unskinned bead, running water can wash the surface out and leave a rough, weakened seal that has to be cut out and redone. Once skinned, water is much less of a problem than physical contact.
Is 24 hours enough if the bead is deep?
24 hours is the figure for using the shower, and it is about the skin rather than the depth. Full cure does depend on depth — No Mould cures at 2mm per 24 hours — so a deep bead needs longer before it is at full strength.
Can I speed it up with a heater or hair dryer?
No. Warm dry air does not help a moisture-cured silicone and can slow it.
Should I use No Mould just because it is faster?
