How To Build a Floating Desk
How do you build a floating, wall-mounted desk?
A floating desk turns an awkward nook into a workspace without eating any floor area. The structure is simple — a timber frame screwed into wall studs, a panel on top, and a trim piece on the front edge — and it uses two different Selleys adhesives for two different jobs. Selleys Aquadhere Durabond reinforces the screwed frame joints, and Selleys Liquid Nails Fast Grab fixes the front trim.
The one thing to be clear about before you start: this desk is held up by screws into studs, not by glue. Aquadhere Durabond's technical data sheet states plainly that it is not recommended for structural applications, and Liquid Nails Fast Grab's says it should not be used as the sole bonding agent for structural bonding. The adhesives add rigidity and stop joints working loose; the mechanical fixings carry the load.
What you need

How to build it
- Assemble the E-frame. Screw the three lumber "arms" to the fourth base piece, arranged in the shape of an E — one at each end and one in the centre. For extra stability, glue the joints with Selleys Aquadhere Durabond.
- Mark the wall. Use your stud finder to locate two areas where the desk can be supported — one at the side and one at the back. Mark them out with a pencil and spirit level.
- Attach the supports. Place the E-frame against the wall and screw it in at the stud marks with screws at least 65 mm long. Fasten additional screws to the wall evenly along the frame.
- Assemble the surface. Place the desk surface panel or panels on top of a plywood base to create one surface panel. If the fit is good, glue it in place. Use 12 mm screws in the back of the plywood. Sand the surface and edges down.
- Install the desk. Place the desk surface on top of the E-frame and nail it into place. Then secure the trim piece to the front of the desk with Selleys Liquid Nails Fast Grab.

Three characteristics of this glue change how you handle the frame. First, apply a thin layer to one surface only — it expands and foams as it cures, and a heavy application squeezes out and foams up around the joint. Second, assemble within 10 minutes and clamp firmly; a better bond comes from tighter clamping, and Selleys warns that damp surfaces and high humidity cause increased foaming and a weakened joint. Third, it needs atmospheric moisture to cure, and for very dry porous surfaces Selleys suggests wiping with a damp cloth for one minute before bonding.
The upside for a desk you intend to finish is that Durabond is sandable without clogging sandpaper the way PVA glues can, and it takes paint and stain after sanding. Squeeze-out that has been sanded flush will not show as a pale patch under stain the way a smear of PVA does — though it is still far easier to remove excess before it cures than after.
Fixing the trim with Liquid Nails Fast Grab
The trim piece is a different problem: a thin length that has to sit flush along the front edge with nothing to clamp against. Liquid Nails Fast Grab suits it because of its instant grab of up to 100 kg/m² on a timber-to-timber bond, which holds the trim in place while the bond develops.
The timing is tight. Bring the surfaces together as soon as possible — within the first 5 minutes. Allow a minimum of 24 hours before removing any temporary fasteners or tape, with full cure at 72 hours, and 12 hours before painting. The adhesive bridges gaps up to 9 mm, which covers minor irregularity along the edge of the panel.
Limitations — what these adhesives will not do
Aquadhere Durabond
- Not recommended for structural applications.
- Not suitable for below-waterline applications or continuous submersion.
- Not for polyethylene or polypropylene plastics — test other plastics first.
- Requires atmospheric moisture to cure, so use may be restricted in dry conditions.
- Cannot be used below 5°C.
- Wear gloves — the adhesive bonds to skin.
Liquid Nails Fast Grab
- Do not use as the sole bonding agent for structural bonding; use mechanical fasteners in high-stress applications.
- Avoid use in tightly clamped joints such as cabinet making or joinery — which is why it belongs on the trim, not in the frame joints.
- Not for polyethylene, polypropylene or PTFE; pre-test other plastics and rubbers.
- Not for mirrors — use Liquid Nails Mirror & Metal.
- Not for metals heated by direct sunlight.
- Interior and sheltered exterior applications protected from moisture only.
Note the point about tightly clamped joints. It is the reason this project uses two adhesives rather than one: Fast Grab is not intended for close-fitting joinery joints, and Durabond is not intended to hold an unclamped trim against a vertical face.
Clean up
Clean tools and uncured Aquadhere Durabond with acetone or turps immediately after use; cured product has to be scraped, cut, chiselled or sanded. Liquid Nails Fast Grab is water-based — uncured product comes off with water, cured product has to be scraped or sanded.
