Selleys Complete Clean Multipurpose Spray is a household grade disinfectant cleaner for hard non-porous surfaces in kitchens, bathrooms and laundries. It kills 99.9% of germs — S. aureus and E. coli — and cuts through grease, grime and stains. It comes ready to use in a 750mL trigger bottle and carries a fresh lemon citrus fragrance.

The distinction that matters most is between cleaning and disinfecting, because they are two different actions with the same bottle. Spray and wipe cleans a surface. What the numbers mean in practice

Ten minutes is the figure to build your routine around. Selleys gives it twice — once for disinfection, and once for surfaces that come into contact with food, which should be rinsed or wiped with a clean damp cloth 10 minutes after use. In a kitchen that is easier to achieve than it sounds: spray the benches and the splashback first, do something else, then come back with a clean damp cloth. The wait is the product working, not the product sitting idle.

A pH of 2 to 3 puts the formula at the acidic end of the scale. Read the exclusion list below in that light, and note the safety directions: protective gloves and clothing including eye and face protection, and immediate irrigation with copious water for 15 minutes if any gets in your eyes.

"Hard non-porous" is the phrase that defines the whole use list. Every surface Selleys names — splashbacks, benchtops, bathtubs, toilets, basins, bins, floors — has a sealed face. Three routines from one bottle

Selleys publishes three different sequences, and mixing them up is the most common way to get a disappointing result from a product that is working correctly.

Cleaning: spray the soiled area, wipe with a damp cloth. No wait.

Disinfecting: spray, leave for 10 minutes, then rinse or wipe from the surface. The wait is the whole routine — without it the 99.9% claim does not apply.

Food-contact surfaces: rinse or wipe with a clean damp cloth 10 minutes after use. This is a rinse step for surfaces food will touch, and it is stated separately from the disinfection routine.

In a kitchen the three overlap conveniently. Spray the benches, splashback and bin, leave the room, and come back after ten minutes with a clean damp cloth — that single pass satisfies the disinfecting instruction and the food-contact instruction at the same time, because both use the same ten-minute figure.

Limitations — where it should NOT be used

• Not recommended for porous, unsealed or cracked surfaces. A crack exposes the porous body underneath, which is why damage moves a surface out of the suitable list regardless of what it is made of.
• Not recommended for fabric.
• Not recommended for acrylic plastics.
• Not recommended for marble or granite. Stone benchtops are the most common casualty here, and a dulled or etched stone surface cannot be cleaned back.
• Not recommended for aluminium.
• The product may be incompatible with some surfaces — test an inconspicuous area first.
• Hard surface disinfectant only. Not for use on skin.
• Do not mix with other detergents and chemicals.

Safety directions

Storage

Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated place out of direct sunlight, away from foodstuffs and away from sources of heat or ignition. Keep the container standing upright and closed when not in use, and check it regularly for leaks. Turning the nozzle to OFF after every use is worth the second it takes if the bottle lives in a cupboard a child can open.

This is the strongest classification in the Complete Clean range and the one worth knowing about, because the products look alike on a shelf. The Glass & Mirror spray is Category 2A, irritation, signal word Warning. This multipurpose disinfectant spray is Category 1, eye damage, signal word Danger — meaning permanent injury rather than stinging that passes.

The practical difference: with a Category 1 product, a splash in the eye needs an immediate 15-minute flush and a call to the Poisons Information Centre, not a rinse and a blink. Wear eye protection when spraying above shoulder height, which is most of what a multipurpose cleaner gets used for — range hoods, tiles, door frames.

Never mix it with other cleaning products, particularly bleach or an acid bathroom cleaner. Selleys does not publish the full composition of this variant, so treat it as a disinfectant cleaner of unknown reactivity and use it on its own.

How long do I leave it on to disinfect?
