What is Selleys Kwik Grip Crystal Clear, and where should you use it?

Selleys Kwik Grip Crystal Clear is a solvent-based clear contact adhesive that applies clear and dries crystal clear, for less mess and invisible bond lines. It is a contact adhesive in the true sense: it forms an instant bond on contact once both coated surfaces are brought together, and it produces a durable, heat and water resistant bond suitable for interior and exterior use.

Its particular strength is a neat, clear finish when bonding large, flat, close-fitting surfaces. That phrase is the buying decision in miniature. A contact adhesive works by applying a thin film to both faces and letting it tack off, so the two films can meet across the whole area at once — which only happens if the surfaces actually meet. On a rough or ill-fitting joint there is nothing for the two films to grip on to, and a gap-filling construction adhesive is the right product instead.

Why the clear finish matters

Most contact adhesives dry to an opaque yellow or beige film. That is invisible under a laminate, and very visible at the edge of a glass or translucent panel, or wherever a bond line shows. Crystal Clear exists to solve exactly that problem: it applies clear and dries clear, so the join reads as a join rather than as a stripe of adhesive.

It also means squeeze-out at the edges is less forgiving of carelessness than you might expect. Clear adhesive left on a visible face is still a glossy film, and it is still very difficult to remove once cured. Wipe as you go.

Where to use it

• Bonding large, flat, close-fitting surfaces where the bond line will be visible
• Glass and plastic work where a neat, invisible finish matters
• Interior and exterior applications — the cured bond is heat and water resistant

Pre-test any plastic before you commit to the job. The product is not suitable for polyethylene or polypropylene, and the product page advises testing plastics first as a general rule, because the range of plastics on the market behaves very differently under a solvent-based adhesive. Some will simply not bond; others can be attacked by the solvent itself.

How to apply it

1. Ensure the surfaces are clean and dry. A contact adhesive puts down a thin film, and a thin film cannot bridge dust or grease.
2. Apply to both surfaces. Both faces need a coat — this is what distinguishes a contact adhesive from a glue you apply to one side and clamp.
3. Allow to tack off.
4. Press the surfaces firmly together. The bond is instant on contact, so position the parts before they touch.

The instant bond is the point of the product and also its main risk. Once the two tacked films meet, there is no sliding the piece into place. On a large panel, the usual technique is to keep the surfaces separated with spacers, align everything, then remove the spacers progressively and press down as you go.

Clean up

Clean up while wet. The product page gives two solvents for uncured adhesive: xylene in the directions, and mineral turps in the clean-up note. Cured adhesive is very difficult to remove.

Excess adhesive on the face of the jointed materials may also be removed with solvent, but take care that the materials themselves are not damaged by the solvent. That warning is worth heeding on exactly the surfaces this product is aimed at — a solvent that lifts a smear of adhesive off an acrylic panel can also craze the acrylic.

This variant carries a classification the rest of the Kwik Grip range does not: repeated exposure, Category 2. The other contact adhesives are classified for single-exposure narcotic effects — the drowsiness you feel on the day. This one is additionally flagged for cumulative harm from prolonged or repeated exposure.

That changes the calculus for regular use rather than for one job. If you use Crystal Clear occasionally in a ventilated space, the single-exposure precautions cover it. If you use it daily — a workshop, a production bench, a repeated craft process — treat ventilation and respiratory protection as an ongoing control rather than a per-job decision, because the hazard this classification describes accumulates.

Cyclohexane at 30–60% is the bulk of the formulation and the reason it dries clear.

Protection

• Gloves — nitrile rubber for intermittent contact; assess against your own conditions.
• Eye protection — chemical goggles or safety glasses.
• Ventilation — use only in a well-ventilated area, with local exhaust where available, and a respirator where an inhalation risk remains. The vapour is heavier than air and collects in hollows; do not work in a confined space.
• Clothing — overalls and safety shoes. Wash hands before eating, drinking or smoking, and wash contaminated clothing before reuse.
