What is Selleys Knead It Multipurpose, and where should you use it?

Selleys Knead It Multipurpose is a hand-kneadable, fast setting epoxy putty for repairing, rebuilding, reshaping or restoring almost anything. You cut off the amount you need, knead it until the colour is uniform, and press it into place. Once cured it can be drilled, filed, machined, screwed, sawn, sanded, stained and painted, which is what separates a putty like this from an adhesive: you are replacing missing material, not just sticking two pieces together.

The thing to know before you open it is the working time. At normal temperatures you have approximately 3–5 minutes from kneading to placement. Prepare the surface first, decide exactly where the putty is going, and only then cut off what you can use in that window.

What the key numbers mean in practice

The gap between the 60 minute and 24 hour figures is the part people misread. At an hour you can start machining the repair; that is a workability milestone, not a strength one. The cold-weather note matters more than it looks. If you are working in a shed in winter, below 20°C, the set takes longer than the figures above. That is not a fault; it is the reaction running slower. The practical answer is to give it more time rather than to disturb the repair to see whether it is ready.

Where to use it

Knead It Multipurpose is a general-purpose repair putty, so the list of uses is defined more by what it sticks to and what it must not do than by a fixed set of jobs. Selleys states it is suitable for:

• Repairing, rebuilding, reshaping and restoring parts and fittings
• Some plastics — but not polyethylene (PE) or polypropylene (PP)
• Underwater repairs after full cure — note the qualifier: after full cure, not during it

That underwater qualifier is worth reading twice. It describes where the finished repair can sit, not where you can apply the product. How to apply it

1. Make sure the surface is clean and roughened. Both parts of that instruction count. Clean removes contamination; roughening gives the epoxy a mechanical key. A polished surface gives it nothing to grip.
2. Cut off the required amount and knead until the colour is uniform. Streaks mean the resin and hardener are not yet properly combined, and an incompletely mixed epoxy will not reach its intended strength.
3. Apply within the working time — approximately 3–5 minutes.
4. Smooth with a damp cloth if required. This is the cheapest way to get a clean profile: shape it properly while it is soft rather than sanding it later.
5. After approximately 60 minutes it can be drilled or sanded.
6. Allow approximately 24 hours for full cure.

Wear gloves when handling. Selleys states this directly, and it applies from the moment you start kneading — that is when you are in contact with uncured resin and hardener.

Limitations — where Knead It Multipurpose should not be used

These are the manufacturer's stated limits and they are the most important part of the page:

• Does not adhere to polyethylene, polypropylene or PTFE. These are low surface energy plastics; nothing you do to the surface will make the epoxy grip them reliably.

Finishing and machining

Once it has cured, Knead It Multipurpose can be drilled, sanded, machined and painted. In practice this means you can rebuild a worn or broken feature, then bring it back to size with ordinary tools — tap a hole into it, file a profile, sand it flush and paint over the repair.

Category 1A skin sensitisation is the sub-category for substances with strong evidence of sensitising humans — a step more definite than a plain Category 1. That is entirely expected for an epoxy system, and it is the reason a hand-kneadable putty is a product to wear gloves for rather than to work bare-handed.

The temptation with this format is obvious: it is designed to be kneaded by hand, and it is far easier to mix the two parts properly with bare fingers. Doing that repeatedly is the classic route to epoxy sensitisation, which is permanent once acquired. Knead it inside disposable nitrile gloves.

The chronic aquatic hazard classification means uncured material should not reach drains, stormwater or waterways. Wipe excess onto paper and bin it; do not rinse uncured putty down a sink.

Fully cured, the putty is inert and can be drilled, sanded and painted.

• Eye protection — chemical goggles or safety glasses.
