For anything deeper, the instruction that actually governs the job is the layering rule: apply in 6 mm layers, allowing each layer to dry before the next. A water based filler dries by losing water through its surface, so a thick single fill skins over while the core stays wet. That is what produces a repair that seems solid on the day and then sinks or cracks later. Six millimetres at a time keeps every layer inside the range the drying time was measured for.

Painting adds its own timing. The product page states that painting with oil based paints is not recommended until 24 hours after the filler has been applied. Water based paints follow the shorter drying time; oil based systems need the day.

A powder gives you control over consistency and a long shelf life in the bag; a ready-mixed filler gives you consistency you cannot get wrong, no mixing vessel, and no clock running from the moment you add water.

For substantial filling, the ready-mixed form has one particular advantage. Because the layering rule means you may be returning to the same repair several times across a day, you are not committed to mixing a batch you then have to use or throw away — you take what you need for each layer and close the lid.

The trade-off is storage. A ready-mixed water based filler can dry out in a poorly sealed container, which is why the instruction is to keep the container closed when not in use and store it in a cool, dry place.

Limitations — where Spakfilla Heavy Duty should not be used

• Avoid using below 5°C or in wet conditions. This is the manufacturer's stated limitation, and it covers both temperature and the state of the surface and weather.
• Where movement occurs, use Selleys No More Gaps. The product page puts it as: not recommended where building movement is expected — use a flexible sealant instead.
• Exterior surfaces must be painted to protect the repair from rain.

"Tough and durable" describes hardness, not flexibility. A rigid filler in a joint that moves will crack, and on masonry, movement is the usual reason a crack appeared in the first place. If a crack has widened over time or keeps reopening in the same line, treat it as a movement joint and use a flexible product.

Clean up: use water to clean up before the filler sets. Being water based, it comes off tools and hands easily while wet and needs mechanical removal once set.

Hazard classification

Spakfilla Heavy Duty is not classified as hazardous under the criteria of Safe Work Australia GHS 7. It carries no signal word and no hazard statements, because it does not meet the thresholds for any GHS hazard class. It is not classified as Dangerous Goods for transport either.
