What is Selleys White For Life Tile & Grout Cleaner, and where should you use it?

Selleys White For Life Tile & Grout Cleaner is a 750mL trigger spray that gently cleans tile and grout surfaces. It cuts through and removes soap scum, soil and minor efflorescence, and helps restore the lustre of grout and tile.

What sets it apart from a general bathroom cleaner is what it leaves out and what it leaves behind. It contains no abrasives, harsh acids or bleach, and it has no harsh odours. Instead of etching into the grout surface to get a result, it leaves a protective, water repellent barrier that discourages future build-up of soap scum and mould.

That distinction is the reason the product exists. Acidic and abrasive cleaners work by removing the top layer of the grout along with the stain, which opens the surface up and makes the next round of staining faster. Cleaning without etching is what enhances White For Life Grout's resistance to yellowing, staining and blackening — when used as a system and as per pack directions.

How to use it

1. Turn the nozzle to the spray position and spot test on a small inconspicuous area to check compatibility.
2. Spray onto the surface and leave for 1 to 2 minutes.
3. Wipe with a damp cloth or sponge, then rinse thoroughly with a wet sponge.
4. Wipe dry with a paper towel from glass, shower screens, sinks, taps and similar surfaces before they dry, for a streak-free finish.
5. For stubborn grime, apply again and leave for 3 to 5 minutes. If required, use a scourer suitable for the tile surface being cleaned, then rinse thoroughly again.

Always follow up with a clean water rinse after cleaning tiles and grout. On copper, brass, aluminium, plastic and painted surfaces, rinse immediately and wipe dry with a paper towel.

What the dwell times mean in practice

The 1 to 2 minute dwell is the normal working time — long enough for the cleaner to lift soap scum, short enough that it is not sitting on the surface. The 3 to 5 minute extended dwell is the maximum given for stubborn grime, and it is paired with a specific instruction to rinse thoroughly again afterwards.

Those numbers matter because of the corresponding limitation: avoid leaving the product in prolonged contact with tiles or with sanitary ware such as shower screens, sinks and taps. Longer is not better with this product. If one application has not shifted the deposit, the answer is a second application with the stated dwell, not an extended soak.

Limitations to observe

• Do not use in conjunction with, or immediately after, any chemical, bleach, detergent or other cleaning product. Mixing cleaning chemicals is both a safety issue and a performance one.

Keeping tiles and grout white

Regular cleaning is the maintenance requirement behind the White For Life system's whiteness and stain resistance claims. Clean grout and tile surfaces regularly with this cleaner to avoid a build-up of soil and soap scum, and do not use harsh acidic cleaners on them.

The logic is simple enough: mould feeds on the residue that collects on a surface rather than on the grout itself, so the surface that is kept clear of soap scum does not support growth in the first place. Areas subject to heavy use will need cleaning more often than the rest of the room.

This classification independently confirms the claim the page above is built on. The product is sold on what it leaves out: no abrasives, no harsh acids, no bleach. A cleaner with acid in it would carry a skin corrosion or serious eye damage classification; a bleach-based cleaner would too, and would usually attract a dangerous goods classification as well. This one carries no eye classification at all, no corrosivity, no irritation and no transport classification — a single health hazard from three preservatives present at well under a tenth of a per cent each, plus a surfactant below one per cent.
