Filling the joints

Selleys White For Life Ready To Use Grout is a water-based, easy to use, brilliant white grout that resists yellowing, staining and blackening.

Ready-to-use means no mixing, which matters for consistency as much as for convenience — hand-mixed powder grout varies batch to batch, and a variation in water content shows up as a variation in shade along the joint once it dries.

Protecting the grout

Selleys White For Life Grout Sealer is designed to help protect grouts, locking out water and oil-based stains, soil and mould when used as a system.

That last qualifier is Selleys' own and it is the honest framing of what a sealer does. The sealer is not an independent barrier that rescues any grout — it is the second half of a system with the grout itself. Treat it as the finishing step of the grouting job rather than as a remedy applied later to a joint that is already failing.

Selleys White For Life Tile & Grout Cleaner removes dirt and stains from tiles and grout. It is the maintenance product for the range, and maintenance is what determines how long a white grout line stays white.

Hazard: this range is unusually uniform

There is no safety divide to draw here, and that is worth saying plainly rather than manufacturing one. The three White For Life products that publish a classification — the grout, the grout sealer and the tile and grout cleaner — carry exactly the same one: signal word Warning, a single statement, H317, may cause an allergic skin reaction. None is Dangerous Goods by any transport mode. No eye classification, no irritation, no corrosivity, no flammability, on any of them.

The reason is the same on all three: the declared components are isothiazolinone preservatives, present at well under a tenth of a per cent each — the biocides that stop a water-based product spoiling in the container. On the cleaner, the classification independently confirms what the range claims for itself. A cleaner containing acid would carry a corrosion or serious eye damage classification and a bleach-based one usually a transport classification too; this one carries neither, which is the evidence behind “no abrasives, no harsh acids, no bleach”. Two consequences follow. The instruction never to use the cleaner with, or straight after, another chemical stands regardless — the hazard profile describes the product on its own, not what it becomes mixed with something else on a wet surface. And because sensitisation is permanent once acquired and builds from repeated ordinary contact, gloves are worth wearing for the whole job, most of all for grouting, which keeps wet material on your hands longer than anything else in the range.

The ready to use tile adhesive publishes no hazard classification on its product page. Treat that as an absence of data rather than an all-clear, and read the pack.

Added up, a shower recess is most of a week, not a weekend. Tile on day one, grout on day two or three once the adhesive has set, then three days before the grout sees water — which is also the earliest it can be sealed — then an hour per coat of sealer and 24 hours before normal use. Five to six days from the first tile to the first shower, and the long waits are the two nobody plans for: the 24 to 48 hours before grouting, and the three days before water. Rushing either is what produces the grey, patchy joint the White For Life range exists to prevent, because grout that has been wetted before it has cured does not recover its colour.

One temperature window governs all three wet products, and the sealer's is the tightest. The adhesive wants 10°C to 35°C, the grout will not go on below 10°C or in damp conditions, and the sealer must not be applied below 10°C — with the further instruction to seal in the morning or evening where the day is above 30°C. An unheated bathroom in a cold snap stops the whole job, not just one stage of it, and the adhesive carries a second penalty besides: below 20°C the 24-hour foot-traffic wait gets longer.

Sealing does not buy you more time to mop up a spill. Both the grout page and the sealer page publish the same figure — the grout resists penetration by common stains for up to 10 minutes — so on the published numbers the sealer does not extend that window. What Selleys claims for it is different in kind: locking out water and oil-based stains, soil and mould when used as a system with the grout, re-applied every 12 months or whenever the grout has been scrubbed hard. Treat the sealer as the thing that keeps the joint white over years, and keep wiping spills immediately either way.

For estimating, the grout publishes real coverage figures: about 2 m² from one cartridge and about 6 m² from the 1.4 kg pack, both based on 300 mm × 30 mm tiles with joints 3 mm wide and 5 mm deep. Wider or deeper joints will use more. On the tile order itself, add 10% for waste and cuts, or 15% if you are laying diagonally. And check the substrate before any of it: cement render needs 7 days to cure and concrete 28 days before tiling over them.
