What is Selleys Super Glue Stand-up, and where should you use it?

Selleys Super Glue Stand-up is a cyanoacrylate super glue in a free-standing tube that will not clog, because the product retracts back into the tube after use. It sets in 10 seconds, dries clear, requires no mixing, and it is made for all types of household repairs without leaving a mess on the benchtop.

Two design decisions define it. The tube stands up, so it is not lying on its side leaking onto the surface between applications. And the retraction after use keeps the nozzle clear — which is what stops a part-used tube from becoming a solid one before the next repair comes along.

What the key numbers mean in practice

Three separate stages, and it is worth naming them properly because they get conflated constantly.

Set time, 10 seconds. The period you hold the two parts together. After this the joint holds itself, but it is nowhere near its final strength.

Initial cure, 30 minutes. Sufficient bond strength for practical use. The repaired item can be handled, moved and put back where it belongs.

Full cure, approximately 12 hours. The bond continues to strengthen over this period. Anything that has to carry weight, take a knock, or be pulled on should wait for it.

The gap between the first and third numbers is where most disappointing super glue repairs live. A joint that holds after ten seconds feels finished; it is not, and loading it at that point is what produces the "the glue didn't work" verdict a day later.

How to apply it

Preparation decides the outcome. Surfaces to be bonded must be clean, dry, free of dust and close fitting. Cyanoacrylate works as a thin film between two faces that already meet; it does not bridge a space, and it does not compensate for a poor fit.

1. Pierce the seal at the end of the tube by attaching the nozzle with the cap and turning clockwise.
2. Remove the cap and apply a minimal amount of glue to one surface. Minimal is deliberate — excess adhesive in the middle of a joint cures slowly and stays the weakest part of the repair.
3. Bring the surfaces together and apply slight pressure. Hold until bonded.
4. Wipe the tip of the tube, replace the cap and store upright in a dry, cool place.
5. Allow 30 minutes for sufficient bond strength for practical use. The bond strengthens over about 12 hours.

Safety — read before opening the tube

• The glue will bond skin and eyes on contact. Keep out of reach of children.
• Avoid contact with skin and eyes, and avoid breathing the vapour.
• If fingers stick together, apply a solvent such as acetone to the contact areas, then wash off with water.
• Do not use solvents near the eye or on open wounds.
• In case of eye contact, flush immediately with water for at least 15 minutes and seek medical attention.
• If medical advice is needed, have the container or label at hand, and refer to the Safety Data Sheet. Keep the card for reference.

Selleys also notes that super glue can create a white residue on the surface of a material if the area is not well ventilated. The affected area can be cleaned with acetone, but check compatibility first because acetone may damage sensitive materials. Ventilating the space while you work is the easier answer — the residue comes from vapour settling on the surrounding surface, and airflow prevents it forming.

Getting the joint right

The four preparation conditions — clean, dry, free of dust, close fitting — are listed in order of how often they are ignored, roughly in reverse. Close fitting is the one that decides everything. Hold the pieces together dry and look along the break: if they close to a hairline for their whole length, the repair will hold. If they rock or leave a visible gap, this adhesive has no gap-filling ability and cannot bridge it.

Dust is the next most common cause of failure, and it is worst on exactly the materials this glue is best at. A fresh ceramic or china break sheds a fine powder that settles back into the joint; brush or blow it clear before applying any adhesive rather than trapping it in the bond line.

And keep the quantity minimal. Excess adhesive in the middle of a joint cures far more slowly than a thin film does and remains the weakest part of the repair, so a drop that disappears when the parts close is doing more for you than a bead that squeezes out.

Limitations — where Super Glue Stand-up should not be used

• Not for polyethylene or polypropylene plastics.
• Not for glass.
• It may cause some leather to discolour or harden. Test in an inconspicuous area for compatibility with leather before using it on anything visible.
• No gap filling. Surfaces must be close fitting.

Storage

Wipe the tip of the tube, replace the cap, and store upright in a dry, cool place. Standing it upright is not just tidiness — it is how the retracting, non-clog design is meant to be used, and a tube stored on its side with a loose cap defeats it.

H335 is the classification people do not expect from a product this small. Cyanoacrylate cures by reacting with moisture, and the vapour reacts with the moisture in your eyes and airways in the same way — which is why a freshly glued joint stings the eyes and catches the throat. In a small unventilated space, with a larger quantity, that is respiratory irritation rather than a passing sting. Work with the window open.

The other well-known property is not in the classification at all: it bonds skin to skin in seconds, because skin is moist. If fingers bond together, do not pull them apart — that tears the skin. Soak in warm soapy water and ease them apart gradually, and seek medical help for eyelids or any bond involving the eye.

Cyanoacrylate also reacts strongly with cotton and wool. Do not wipe spills with a cotton rag or use it on cotton gloves — the reaction is exothermic and can generate enough heat to burn and to produce smoke.

Protection

• Gloves — nitrile rubber for intermittent contact; assess against your own conditions.
• Eye protection — chemical goggles or safety glasses.
• Ventilation — use only in a well-ventilated area, with local exhaust where available. Vapour is heavier than air and collects in hollows; do not work in a confined space.
• Clothing — wash hands before eating, drinking or smoking, and wash contaminated clothing before reuse.
