Sealing Leaks on Irrigation Poly Pipe
How do you seal leaks in garden irrigation poly pipe?
The honest answer is that you cannot, with a sealant. Poly pipe is virtually impossible to get sealants or adhesives to adhere to, and there is nothing in the Selleys range that can be recommended for this repair. Contacting an irrigation supplier is the best course of action — they carry the barbed joiners, clamps and repair couplings that are the correct fix.
That is a short answer, so the rest of this page explains why it is the answer, which is worth knowing before you spend an afternoon trying products that will not work.
Why nothing sticks to poly pipe
Garden irrigation poly pipe is polyethylene. Along with polypropylene and PTFE, polyethylene is one of the small group of plastics that defeat almost every adhesive technology, and the exclusion appears again and again across the Selleys technical data sheets:
- Roof & Gutter Silicone — not for use on polyethylene, polypropylene or PTFE.
- Brick & Concrete Silicone — not for use on polyethylene, polypropylene or Teflon.
- No Mould and Wet Area Silicone — not suitable for PE, PP or PTFE.
- Knead It Aqua — will not adhere to polyethylene, polypropylene or Teflon.
- Flexiseal FC — not suitable for PE, PP, PTFE and some plastics.
The reason is the surface itself. Polyethylene has very low surface energy, which means liquids do not wet out on it — an adhesive beads up rather than flowing into the surface, and without that intimate contact there is nothing for a bond to form from. It is chemically inert as well, so there is nothing for an adhesive to react with. This is the same property that makes poly pipe so good at carrying water for decades without degrading.
The one partial exception, and why it does not help here
Selleys All Plastics is the one product in the range that will bond polyethylene and polypropylene at all. It is a cyanoacrylate adhesive supplied as a 3g tube with a surface-activating primer pen: the primer chemically activates the plastic surface so the adhesive can grip. With the primer applied to both sides, the published bond strengths are 5.6 MPa on polyethylene and 2.9 MPa on polypropylene.
That is a real bond, and for a broken toy, a remote control or an ornament it is the right product. It is the wrong product for irrigation pipe for three separate reasons:
- It is a 3g tube. There is not enough material to seal a length of pipe joint.
- Cyanoacrylate cures rigid. Poly pipe flexes constantly — with water pressure, with ground movement, with temperature. A hard bond on a flexing pipe is a crack waiting to happen.
- The surfaces have to be clean, dry and close fitting. A leaking irrigation joint in the ground is wet, and it is usually leaking precisely because the fit has gone.
Selleys All Plastics is ideal for repairing toys, games, office items, remote controls and ornaments. It is not an irrigation repair product.
What actually fixes a leaking poly pipe joint
Poly pipe systems are designed to be repaired mechanically, not chemically. The fittings do the sealing by compression, and they are cheap. An irrigation supplier will have:
- Barbed joiners and elbows for splicing a new section into a damaged run.
- Ratchet clamps that pull a fitting tight into the bore of the pipe.
- Compression couplings that seal on an O-ring rather than on adhesion.
- Repair saddles for a puncture in the wall of a pipe run.
Cutting out 100mm of damaged pipe and putting a joiner in takes a few minutes and gives a repair that outlives the pipe. No sealant approach comes close.
A word on what a sealant would do if you tried
It would appear to work. A silicone bead over a weeping joint skins over, looks solid, and holds while the system is off. Then the pump starts, the pipe expands slightly, and the bead — which is sitting on the pipe rather than bonded to it — peels off in one piece or lets water track underneath it.
The failure is usually a week or two later, often underground and out of sight, and by then it can have been quietly wasting water the whole time. That is the practical argument for doing the mechanical repair first rather than last.
Safety: the one product here that does bond poly is a Danger-classified one
The answer above is that no Selleys product is recommended for this repair. The only one named as bonding polyethylene and polypropylene at all is Selleys All Plastics, and it is worth knowing what it carries before anyone tries it anyway.
All Plastics is classified as hazardous with the signal word Danger: flammable liquids Category 2 — H225, highly flammable liquid and vapour; eye damage/irritation Category 2A — H319, causes serious eye irritation; and specific target organ toxicity single exposure Category 3, narcotic effects — H336, may cause drowsiness or dizziness.
Those classifications belong to the primer, not the glue. The primer pen is the flammable half of this two-step system — over 60% isopropanol — and its job is to activate the plastic surface so the cyanoacrylate can key to it. The adhesive itself is a cyanoacrylate, with the properties that implies: it bonds skin instantly, its vapour irritates eyes and airways, and it reacts strongly with cotton and wool.
What that means for the jobs this product is actually for. The page above is right that toys, remote controls, office items and ornaments are its use — which means a bench, indoors, at close range. So the H225 risk is a bench risk: a soldering iron, a heat gun or a desk lamp on the same bench while the primer is flashing off. Apply the primer away from ignition sources and let it dry clear before anything hot comes near. Category 2 flammable means the vapour is ignitable at ordinary room temperature without anything warming up first, and it is heavier than air, so it collects in hollows — do not work in a confined space, and do not lean into a box or a cupboard to do it.
H319 plus a 3g tube used at close range is the eye case. You are working with your face near a small squeezed tube and pressing a joint together for thirty seconds. Safety glasses, nitrile gloves, and no bare-handed pressing of a wet cyanoacrylate joint. H336 is the reason to have a window open even for a small repair.
And the safety argument reinforces this page's answer. A barbed joiner, a ratchet clamp or a compression coupling from an irrigation supplier introduces no classified product at all — no flammable primer, no solvent, nothing to ventilate. On an underground joint that has to flex with pressure and ground movement, the mechanical repair is both the better fix and the one with nothing attached to it.
