What are Selleys BBQ Tough Wipes, and where should you use them?

Selleys BBQ Tough Wipes are super sized pre-moistened wipes with a nodule side, made for cleaning your BBQ every time you use it. Each wipe measures 250mm x 275mm and is a white cloth with black nodules: the nodules loosen and power through tough dirt, while the strong cloth traps the grime and absorbs the grease.

The two features that decide whether these are the right product for your job are that they are food safe for cleaning surfaces that come into contact with food, and that you do not need to wipe the plate dry afterwards — you can heat the BBQ and start cooking. That makes them a genuine before-or-after-cooking product rather than something you use and then have to rinse.

The sandwich press and health grill application is easy to overlook and is one of the more useful ones — those are ribbed cooking surfaces that are awkward to clean with a cloth, and the nodule side is designed for exactly that kind of texture.

How to use them

1. Open the resealable lid, slowly peel back the resealable sticker and pull a wipe out of the pack.
2. Use the wipe with the nodule side down. Wipe over plates, grills and other dirty surfaces to scrub them clean and absorb the grease and grime.
3. Reseal the sticker and close the lid to keep the remaining wipes fresh and ready for next time.
4. No need to wipe dry — just heat up your BBQ and start cooking.
5. Dispose of the used wipe in the rubbish bin.

One to two wipes are usually needed per BBQ cleaning session. More may be required if the barbecue is very large or very dirty, which is worth knowing when you are deciding how many packs to keep on hand for a summer.

The one trick that makes them work better

Grease is easier to remove if the BBQ is slightly warm. Selleys sets out the sequence: warm the BBQ, turn it off, make sure it is cool enough to touch, then clean. Each step in that order matters — you are looking for residual warmth in the metal, not a live cooking surface, and "cool enough to touch" is the test that tells you when to start.

Limitations — what they will not do

• They will not remove heavily carbonised residue. That material should be scraped off before you clean with BBQ Tough Wipes. A wipe is designed to lift grease and grime, not to break down a hard carbon crust, and rubbing harder will exhaust the wipe rather than shift the deposit.
