Manufacturer source check
Manufacturer sources checked 24 September 2026.
- Cure Rate: TDS: 10 mm in 5–7 days; this is a depth-specific result, not a universal 2 mm-per-day cure schedule.
- Packaging: TDS: clear 300 g and black 400 g cartridges. Confirm the actual pack; the previous black 300 g statement was inconsistent with the linked TDS.
- Service Temperature: TDS: clear −60°C to 180°C; black −40°C to 140°C. These variant-specific values must not be combined into one general rating.
- Limitations: Not for structural glazing or aquariums, or submerged joints where porous substrates admit water to the bond. Not paintable; finish painting first.
- Hardness: TDS clear 28 and black 30 Shore A; retail approximately 22 conflicts. Confirm the exact variant.
- Storage: TDS: 12 months from manufacture below 28°C. Retail says below 30°C; use the matching label.
- Skin time: TDS: 5–10 minutes at 25°C/50% RH. Retail lists 23°C; test conditions differ.
What is Selleys Pro Trade Glass Silicone, and where should you use it?
Selleys Pro Trade Glass Silicone is a 100% neutral cure silicone with excellent weather and UV resistance and a matt finish. It has strong adhesion to glass, low slump, and — importantly for a glazing sealant — it will not corrode metals. It can be used as both an adhesive and a sealant.
The distinction that matters when choosing it is neutral cure versus acetic cure. An acetic silicone bonds well to glass but attacks susceptible metals and mirror backing as it releases acid. This one is a neutral (oxime) cure, so it suits glazing details that involve aluminium, powder coated frames and most metals — and it is listed for mirrors, which an acetic glass silicone is not. Compare it with Selleys Glass Silicone, which is acetic cure and formulated for aquariums, a use this product explicitly excludes.

What the key numbers mean in practice
The clear and black grades are not the same material. That is the most useful thing in the table. The clear has higher tensile strength (2.0 MPa against 1.3 MPa) and a much wider service temperature range (−60°C to 180°C against −40°C to 140°C). The black is far stretchier (>680% elongation against 400%). Choose on the job, not just the colour of the frame: a hot north-facing glazing detail favours the clear; a joint that moves hard favours the black.
The cure rate of 10mm in 5–7 days is slow, and it should shape your programme. Neutral cure silicones cure by reaction with atmospheric moisture, from the surface inward. A 10mm-deep bead is the better part of a week from full performance. That is why the manufacturer says to use approved backing material for joints over 10mm deep — going deeper does not add strength, it just adds uncured silicone.
Skin time and tooling time are both 5–10 minutes. That is a short window. Everything cosmetic — tooling, tape removal, wiping — has to be done inside it. Tack-free comes later, at about an hour, and is not the same thing: the surface stops being sticky long before the bead can be worked or loaded.
±25% movement capability means the cured bead tolerates the joint widening or narrowing by a quarter of its width. No slump means the bead holds its shape in a vertical glazing joint while it cures.
Where to use it
- Windows and glass
- Mirrors
- Splash backs
- Auto, RV, bus and boat applications
- Factory assembly
- Expansion joints
- Weather sealing
- Solar panels
- Industrial, potable water and automotive sealing applications
It is ideal for most common building and glazing substrates including glass, aluminium, non-oily timber, concrete, masonry, most metals and powder coated surfaces. Pre-testing on substrates is recommended.
Two entries in that list are unusual and worth noting. Potable water applications are listed, which most silicone sealants exclude. And solar panels — a detail that combines glass, metal frames, and very wide temperature swings, which is why the non-corroding neutral chemistry and the clear grade's 180°C ceiling matter there. For related trade products, see the glass sealant range.
How to apply it
Surfaces must be clean, dry, and free of dirt, grease, oil or water. Metal and glass surfaces should be cleaned with general-purpose thinners or mineral turpentine and allowed to dry.
- Cut the nozzle at a 45° angle to the desired bead width and apply to the substrate using a sealant gun.
- Use approved backing material for joints over 10mm deep.
- Apply a continuous bead to the frame or joint, and where you are bedding glass, press the glass into place immediately.
- Tool off within the 5–10 minute tooling time.
- Allow to cure fully — 10mm takes 5 to 7 days.
Some surfaces may need a primer. If so, allow the primer to dry before applying sealant. For a neat appearance use masking tape and remove it before the sealant has skinned over.
Use in well-ventilated areas.
Limitations — where it should NOT be used
- Not suitable for structural glazing. This is a weather seal and an assembly adhesive, not a product that carries the glass.
- Not suitable for submerged joints where porous substrates permit water to the bond interface.
- Not suitable for aquarium construction.
- Should not be applied in contact with bituminous materials or some rubber products, as these may contain components which can migrate into the sealant and result in staining or reduced performance.
- Complete painting before applying the sealant, as the sealant cannot be successfully painted over.
- Some plastics — PE, PP, PTFE — may not bond.
The migration warning is the one that is easy to overlook because the failure is delayed. Bitumen and some rubbers contain plasticisers and oils that move into a silicone bead over weeks, leaving a stain along the joint or a soft, weakened seal. If your detail puts the bead against roofing bitumen or an EPDM-type gasket, test it or use a different product.
Clean up and storage
Uncured sealant can be cleaned up with mineral turpentine. Store below 30°C — shelf life is 12 months from date of manufacture if stored below 28°C.
Safety information
Selleys does not publish a safety data sheet for Pro-Trade Glass Silicone in the sources used to build this page, so no GHS hazard classification, signal word or hazard statements are reproduced here.
That is an absence of published data, not a finding that the product is non-hazardous. It should not be read as an all-clear, and the classification of a similar or neighbouring product should not be assumed to apply — variants within a Selleys range frequently carry genuinely different classifications.
Searches return the sheet for the consumer Glass Silicone, which is a different product — this page distinguishes the two on cure chemistry, so their hazard data should not be conflated either.
To obtain it, request the safety data sheet for this product from Selleys directly: 1300 555 205 in Australia, 0800 735 539 in New Zealand, or contact Selleys. For an emergency involving a Selleys product the emergency line is 1800 220 770 in Australia and 0800 220 770 in New Zealand; for suspected poisoning, the Poisons Information Centre is 131 126 in Australia and 0800 764 766 in New Zealand.
