What is the Selleys Wash Up Wiz, and where should you use it?

The Selleys Wash Up Wiz is a scourer built from a mesh construction that cuts through tough dirt without harsh scratching. It measures 250mm x 250mm, rinses clean and never clogs, and is gentle on hands. Selleys states it retains its effectiveness for at least three months, where ordinary scouring pads quickly lose abrasive power and/or fall apart.

The important qualifier sits in Selleys' own footnote, and you should read it before the first use: some soft plastics, painted surfaces, soft metals such as aluminium and copper, and very glossy surfaces may scratch or dull. "Without harsh scratching" is not the same as "will not mark anything". Pre-testing is what closes that gap.

What "at least three months" means in practice

The three-month figure is a durability claim, and it changes how you should think about the cost of the product. An ordinary pad is consumed — it loses its bite and then falls apart, so you replace it repeatedly. The Wash Up Wiz is meant to be kept, rinsed and reused, which is why the mesh is described as never clogging: a pad that clogs is a pad that stops working long before the material wears out.

That also means how you treat it matters. Bleach may discolour it, and strong solvents or highly abrasive cleaners may cause fibre damage and premature wear. Neither will improve the cleaning; both shorten the three months.

How to use it

1. Test first in an inconspicuous area, using the pressure you intend to apply. Selleys is specific about this: test at your working pressure, not gently, and treat it as especially important on old or worn surfaces.
2. Use it with regular dishwashing detergent for crockery, glassware, pots and pans.
3. For stubborn stains on cooktops, splatter tiles, microwave ovens and similar hard surfaces, work the stain directly.
4. Rinse clean after use. The mesh is designed to rinse out rather than clog, so this takes seconds and is what keeps it working.

Selleys recommends keeping a separate Wash Up Wiz in each room to prevent cross contamination — one for the kitchen and one for the bathroom.

Limitations — where it should NOT be used

• Do not use on extremely hot objects.
• Some soft plastics, painted surfaces, soft metals (for example aluminium and copper) and very glossy surfaces may scratch or dull. Pre-test these, and be aware that a dulled gloss cannot be polished back by scouring it further.
• Bleach may discolour the Wash Up Wiz.
• Avoid use with strong solvents or highly abrasive cleaners, as this may lead to fibre damage and premature wear.

The pre-test instruction is worth taking literally because of how the damage happens. Scratching depends on pressure as much as on the pad, so a light test tells you nothing about what a determined scrub will do. Test with the pressure you actually plan to use, on a spot no one will see.
