What is Selleys No More Gaps Interior Multipurpose, and where should you use it?

Selleys No More Gaps Interior Multipurpose is the general-purpose interior gap filler in the No More Gaps range. Selleys describes it as delivering a smooth finish, and says that because of its superior flexibility and low shrinkage, those unsightly gaps and cracks will not re-appear.

It is the product to reach for when the gap is an ordinary interior one — around skirting boards, door frames and windows — and there is no special condition (constant damp, a timber floor, a colour match, a deadline) pushing you towards a more specialised filler in the range. It is for marketed for interior use; see the source discrepancy below, and it is paintable once cured.

Selleys states an application temperature range of 5°C to 35°C and a service temperature range of -20°C to 70°C for the cured product, and describes the finished joint as a long-lasting, flexible seal that will not crack or shrink.

How to apply it

1. Clean the surfaces to be filled and ensure they are dry.
2. Cut the nozzle to the desired width and apply the product into the gap.
3. Smooth with a damp cloth or wet finger.
4. Clean up excess product before curing, with a damp cloth.
5. Allow it to dry before painting or sanding.

A note on the drying time before painting

The product page gives two different figures for this, and they are worth stating plainly rather than picking one silently. Its step-by-step directions say to allow 24 hours to cure fully before painting or sanding. Elsewhere the same page advises allowing the surface to skin prior to painting, which is approximately 30 minutes, and adds that longer skin and cure times should be allowed in damp conditions.

Limitations — where it should not be used

• Indoor use only.
• Not recommended for exterior use or areas exposed to constant water.
• Not suitable for use on polyethylene, polypropylene or Teflon.

Those three cover most of the ways this product gets misused. A splashed bathroom joint or an exterior weatherboard gap both need a different product — a wet area silicone in the first case, an exterior-grade filler in the second.

Low VOC content

The one piece of independent test data published for this product is a VOC Content Test Certificate, issued 14 August 2023 and valid to 14 August 2028. Testing was carried out on 8 August 2023 by FORAY Laboratories (NATA accreditation 1231) using ASTM D3960, the standard practice for determining volatile organic compound content of paints and related coatings, referenced in line with the Green Building Council of Australia's laboratory testing guidance.

The result: 12 grams per litre as VOC content per material, against a Green Star limit of 50 grams per litre for general purpose adhesives and sealants under Green Star Design & As Built V1.3-13.1.1B and Green Star Interiors V1.3-12.1.1B. The certificate states that the product is below the VOC content limits of that category.

If you are working on a project that has to document its material selections — a Green Star fitout, or simply a job where indoor air quality is being taken seriously — that certificate is the document to reference, and 12 g/L against a 50 g/L limit gives useful headroom.

Hazard classification

Selleys No More Gaps Interior Multipurpose is not classified as hazardous under Safe Work Australia GHS 7. No signal word is assigned, and no hazard statements apply. It is also not classified as Dangerous Goods by the criteria of the Australian Code for the Transport of Dangerous Goods by Road & Rail or of New Zealand NZS 5433.

That is a genuine finding rather than an absence of information, and it is worth stating plainly because it does not hold across the rest of the range. Several of this product's own stablemates — No More Gaps Interior Fast Dry, Bathroom & Kitchen, Exterior and Timber Floors — are each classified Skin sensitisation, Category 1, carry H317: may cause an allergic skin reaction, and carry the signal word Warning. The general-purpose filler is the one in that group that does not.

What is in it

The safety data sheet declares no individual chemical entities: the whole formulation is listed as ingredients determined to be non-hazardous or below reporting limits.

The sheet does, however, add a note that the product contains isothiazolinones and that repeated contact may cause sensitisation. There is no contradiction there. Isothiazolinones are the in-can preservatives that stop a water-based filler spoiling in the cartridge, and they are present below the concentration that would trigger a classification — but they are potent enough as a chemical class that the sheet flags them anyway.

The practical reading is the sensible middle one. This is not a product to be nervous about, and you do not need protective equipment to fill a gap with it. It is also not a reason to abandon the habit the directions on this page already describe: the step that says to smooth with a damp cloth or wet finger is the step that puts uncured filler on your skin, and "repeated contact" over a whole house is exactly the pattern the note is aimed at. Wash it off rather than letting it dry on your hands, and use a damp cloth in preference to a bare finger where you can.

If you have already reacted to a filler or a paint in the past — isothiazolinone allergy is common enough to be worth asking about — treat this note as directed at you specifically and wear a glove.

Ordinary precautions

• Avoid eye contact, and avoid repeated or prolonged skin contact.
• Avoid breathing the dust when you sand the cured filler back — the directions on this page allow sanding after cure, and that dust is worth a mask and an open window regardless of how the product is classified.
• Wash hands before eating, drinking or smoking.
• Store the cartridge upright and closed, in a cool, dry, well-ventilated place out of direct sunlight and away from foodstuffs.
• Keep out of reach of children.
