What is Selleys Rapid Mould Killer 500mL, and where should you use it?

Selleys Rapid Mould Killer is a household grade surface spray whose powerful formula effectively eradicates mould, leaving treated surfaces hygienically clean. It also eliminates 99.9% of germs on surfaces. This is the 500mL trigger pack, and Selleys' own summary of the result is a practical one: tiles and grout come up sparkling clean with minimal effort.

The number that governs how you use it is the 2 to 3 minute dwell time. Spray the affected area, leave the product on it for two to three minutes, then rinse, wipe or scrub it off. Spraying and immediately wiping does not give the formula the contact time it needs.

• Rubber bath mats

The shower curtain and bath mat applications are the ones worth noting, because those are the items in a bathroom that are hardest to clean and most likely to be thrown out instead. Both are surfaces that stay damp between uses, which is exactly where mould establishes itself.

How to use it

1. Twist the nozzle to SPRAY or STREAM. Spray covers an area such as a tiled wall; stream puts the product along a grout line without misting the whole room.
2. Spot test on an inconspicuous area before you treat the whole surface.
3. Spray the affected areas.
4. Leave for 2 to 3 minutes.
5. Rinse, wipe or scrub off.

Before you reach for a cloth, brush or scourer, make sure it is not affected by bleach, and avoid using steel wool or wire brushes with the product. A coloured cloth that comes out patchy is a small loss; steel wool on a bathroom surface is a larger one.

Limitations — where it should NOT be used

• Not suitable for fabric.
• Not suitable for mirror tiles.
• Not suitable for metallic surfaces.
• Not suitable for older baths or basins. Age is the criterion here, not material — an old enamel bath has a different surface from a new one, whatever it is made of.
• Do not mix with other cleaners.
• Avoid steel wool and wire brushes, and check that any cloth, brush or scourer you use is not affected by bleach.

There is one further caution that is not an outright exclusion: on some matt finish tiles, or in hard water areas, staining may occur. Selleys' answer to both is the same — patch test first. In a hard water area that test is worth doing even on a tile you have treated successfully elsewhere, because the water on the surface is part of the equation.

Getting a lasting result

Mould in a bathroom returns to the same places because those places stay damp. Treating the surface deals with what is there; the 2 to 3 minute dwell, a proper rinse and a surface that dries out afterwards is what makes the treatment hold. Working through the room systematically — curtain, mat, grout lines, then rinse in the same order — gives every surface its full contact time without you standing and waiting.
