What is Selleys Rapid Mould Killer 750ml, and where should you use it?

Selleys Rapid Mould Killer is a fast acting mould killer whose powerful formula destroys mould and eliminates 99.9% of germs. This is the bigger 750ml trigger pack, which Selleys states is available exclusively in Bunnings. On tiles and grout it leaves the surface sparkling clean with minimal effort.

The headline number is the one to plan around: the product destroys mould in 30 seconds. Spray, leave it for thirty seconds, then rinse, wipe or scrub off. That short dwell time is what makes a whole-bathroom job practical in one pass — but it is still a dwell time, and spraying and immediately wiping cuts it short.

What a 30-second contact time means in practice

Thirty seconds is short enough that the sensible method is to work in sections rather than treating the whole room at once. Spray a wall or a run of grout, count out the time, then rinse or wipe that section before moving on. Doing it that way means every square metre actually gets its thirty seconds, which is not what happens if you spray the entire bathroom first and then start wiping from wherever you happen to be standing.

The nozzle helps here. It twists to SPRAY for covering an area such as a tiled wall, or STREAM for laying the product along a grout line without misting everything around it. On a 750ml bottle, using stream where stream is appropriate is also what makes the larger pack go further.

These are the surfaces Selleys lists for this pack. They have something in common: they stay damp between uses, which is why mould keeps returning to them.

How to use it

1. Twist the nozzle to SPRAY or STREAM, depending on whether you are covering an area or following a line.
2. Spot test first on an inconspicuous area.
3. Spray the affected area.
4. Leave for 30 seconds.
5. Rinse, wipe or scrub off.

Before using a cloth, brush or scourer with the product, make sure it is not affected by bleach, and avoid using steel wool or wire brushes.

Limitations — where it should NOT be used

• Not suitable for fabric.
• Not suitable for mirror tiles.
• Not suitable for metallic surfaces.
• Not suitable for older baths or basins.
• Do not mix with other cleaners.
• Avoid steel wool and wire brushes, and check that any cloth, brush or scourer is not affected by bleach.

One further caution that is not an outright exclusion: on some matt finish tiles, or in hard water areas, staining may occur. Patch test first in both cases. The hard water warning is about your water rather than your tiles, so it applies even to a surface you have treated without incident somewhere else.

The metallic surfaces exclusion is the one most likely to catch someone doing a shower recess, because a screen frame, a soap holder or a floor waste can all be in the line of an overspray. Direct the spray at the mould, and use the stream setting where the target is narrow.
