Interior adhesives and fillers fail outdoors not because they are weak but because they are not formulated for UV, rain and the temperature swing between a January afternoon and a July night. Selleys Liquid Nails Exterior is the outdoor construction adhesive in the range. Liquid Nails Landscape is the one for stone, concrete, capstones, terracotta and timber in landscaping work — bonding pavers to concrete, capstones to walls, stabilising loose stone steps. Its data sheet lists two limitations worth knowing before you buy: it is not for permanent water immersion, and it cannot be painted over. For Landscape, confirm the specification for your cartridge: the manufacturer sources disagree.
Liquid Nails Heavy Duty is the high-strength option for timber, MDF, masonry, concrete, metals and tiles, and it is the product the deck guide uses. Its data sheet describes it as water resistant, not waterproof, and says it should not be used as the sole bonding agent for structural bonding — on a deck it works alongside screws, not instead of them.
For sealing, Selleys Roof & Gutter Silicone is a neutral-cure 100% silicone for roofing, gutters, flashings and skylights, colour-matched to common roof sheet profiles, and it carries a 25-year guarantee against crumbling, cracking or peeling when used as directed. Safety: outdoors does not always mean ventilated
The premise of this page is choosing a product rated for exterior exposure. There is a second axis worth checking at the same time, because several of the jobs listed above are not actually done in open air — a garage, a caravan, a subfloor and a roof space are all enclosed rooms that happen to be outside the house.

H225 is not only about naked flame. The vapour is what ignites, it is heavier than air, and it travels and pools at floor level. So the ignition source that matters is usually low down and some distance away — a hot water unit in the corner of the garage, a gas bayonet beside the deck, a fridge compressor in a caravan. Three guides above — organising a garage, refreshing a garage, making over a caravan — all mean a solvent adhesive in a closed box. Open both ends, and no grinder or heat gun in there while a bead cures.
H336 belongs with it. Drowsiness from accumulated vapour is a nuisance at a bench and a serious problem when the next thing you do is come down a ladder — which is the emergency roofing and storm-prep work on this page.
BBQ Tough Clean is a caustic in an extremely flammable can. H314 is destruction of tissue, not discomfort that builds, so gloves and eye protection go on before the cap comes off and a splash gets flushed rather than wiped. H222 and H229 together are why the barbecue must be completely cold, turned off and the gas isolated before you spray — and why the can does not live on the barbecue shelf, on a hot deck or in a car boot over summer.
The lower-hazard alternative is already named above. Liquid Nails Exterior carries no flammability classification — signal word Warning, H317 and H319 — and this page describes it as the outdoor construction adhesive in the range, rated for wet and dry timber. Where the job is in a garage, under a deck or inside a van and the ignition source cannot be removed, that difference is the deciding factor. For the barbecue, BBQ Tough Grease & Grime Cleaner is Warning with H315 and H319 only.

Common questions about outdoor DIY
Can I use an interior adhesive outside if it is under cover?
Each product's data sheet states whether it is rated for exterior use, and that is the answer to work from. Selleys Aquadhere Interior, for example, is explicitly interior-only and not waterproof; Aquadhere Exterior is the weather-resistant version of the same PVA chemistry.
Which adhesive suits landscaping work?
Liquid Nails Landscape is formulated for stone, concrete, capstones, terracotta and timber. It is not for soft or crumbly materials, and it cannot be painted over once cured. For Landscape, confirm the specification for your cartridge: the manufacturer sources disagree.
What should I use to seal a gutter?
Roof & Gutter Silicone for a dry, prepared joint; Storm when the surface is wet or it is raining. Neither is suitable for continuous submersion.
Can I seal something outdoors in winter?
Check the application temperature on the pack. Roof & Gutter Silicone should not be applied below +5°C or above +40°C, and No More Gaps Exterior has an application range of 5°C to 40°C.
Do I still need screws if I use construction adhesive?
Yes. The Liquid Nails data sheets are explicit that the product should not be used as the sole bonding agent for structural bonding, and that mechanical fasteners should be used in high-stress applications.
Where do I start if the job is a repair rather than a build?
Work out whether the surface will be wet, permanently submerged, or exposed to UV, then check that against the limitations section of the product's data sheet. Those three factors rule out more products than anything else.
