The point to understand before choosing it: the 8-hour figure is the moment your temporary fixings can come off, not the moment the job is finished. What the key numbers mean in practice

The 8-hour figure and the 7-day figure describe different things, and both matter. Eight hours is the minimum set time before you remove temporary fasteners or clamping — enough to stop holding the part in place, and no more. At 24 hours you have a strong bond. Between days two and three the bond is still gaining strength, and 7 days is the full cure. If you load the joint at 8 hours because the fasteners came off, you are loading an adhesive that has done a fraction of its work.

Two conditions extend all of those times: thicker applications and less porous surfaces. It is a solvent-based adhesive, so it has to lose solvent to cure, and it does that most readily through a porous substrate. This is also the reason the manufacturer says to avoid use in tightly clamped joints — a joint squeezed shut leaves the solvent nowhere to go.

Repositionable for up to 20 minutes after fitting is a genuinely useful window on a large or awkward panel. It means you can set a piece, step back, and adjust it, rather than committing on first contact.

How to apply it

Surface preparation

Ensure surfaces are free from oil, grease and dust. Wipe off any pooled water from wet timber. The product page adds that surfaces should be clean and dry.

Standard method

1. Cut the cartridge tip, pierce the foil, fit the nozzle and cut it to the desired opening (5mm). Insert the cartridge into a caulking gun.
2. Apply a bead along the length of the joist, stud or batten. On broad flat surfaces, apply beads every 40 cm.
3. Position the pieces and press firmly together. Fix with sufficient nails, screws or clamping to hold the load and achieve contact over the total bond area. The assembly is repositionable for up to 20 minutes after fitting.
4. Allow the adhesive to set for a minimum of 8 hours before removing any temporary fasteners or clamping. Use with mechanical fasteners in high stress applications.

Contact bond method

For an immediate bond, apply to one surface only, press the parts together and pull them apart. Allow the surfaces to dry out for 2 to 4 minutes, then firmly re-join them. This is the method to use where you cannot clamp or brace and you need the parts to hold on contact.

Limitations — where Heavy Duty should not be used

• Water resistant, not waterproof. The product page states it is not suitable for areas exposed to constant water.
• Do not use as the sole bonding agent for structural bonding.
• Not for mirrors. The range includes a dedicated Liquid Nails Mirror & Metal product for that work.
• Not for metals that may be heated by direct sunlight.
• Avoid use in tightly clamped joints.
• Not recommended for polyethylene, polypropylene, Teflon or bitumen, per the product page. Pre-test any other plastic to determine compatibility.

Clean up

Uncured product may be removed with mineral turpentine. Cured product has to be removed by scraping or sanding. As with any solvent-based construction adhesive, dealing with squeeze-out while it is still wet takes a moment; dealing with it once cured means abrasives on a finished surface.

H336 is the classification to take seriously on this product, because heavy duty construction adhesive is used in exactly the conditions that concentrate vapour — subfloors, wall cavities, roof spaces, under baths.
