Technical timings below are from the TDS v2.2, 1 July 2020; the safety section uses the Australian SDS v4.0, 12 April 2024. The retail page and TDS differ on colour (beige versus translucent) and moisture wording. Confirm the supplied formulation and intended use with Selleys where these differences affect the job.

What is Selleys Liquid Nails Rapid Cure, and where should you use it?

Selleys Liquid Nails Rapid Cure is an advanced, high performance polyurethane construction adhesive with an initial cure of 10 minutes. Selleys describes it as providing the ultimate strength in the Liquid Nails range, and it forms a durable, waterproof bond even when bonding two non-porous surfaces. It bonds most building materials.

Two characteristics set it apart from the water-based and solvent-based adhesives in the range. First, it is a moisture-curing polyurethane: it needs moisture to cure, it adheres to damp and poorly seasoned timber, and it will cure more slowly on very dry timber or in cold weather. Second, it expands slightly as it cures, which helps it fill rough or ill-fitting joints but also means squeeze-out can grow after you have set the piece.

What the key numbers mean in practice

Working time of 5 minutes is the number that governs the job. The adhesive is repositionable for up to 5 minutes after fitting, and after that the piece stays where it is. On a large panel, apply the beads and get the piece placed before you do anything else — there is no useful adjustment window beyond that.

The strength values are separate test results. The TDS reports 3 MPa after one hour on hoop pine and 7 MPa after 24 hours in pine-to-pine tensile shear. Three is about 43% of seven, not more than half. These test results do not establish a strength-growth curve or justify clamp removal at an earlier time. Use the TDS’s separate, conditional clamp-removal instructions.

The cure depends on moisture, and this cuts both ways. Because the polyurethane reacts with moisture, drying times vary with temperature, humidity and the porosity of the materials being bonded. Expect longer dry times for very dry timber, heavier objects, less porous surfaces or cold weather. If the job is slow, spraying the surfaces with a very light mist of water may help speed up the cure — light being the operative word.

It expands slightly as it cures, and bridges gaps up to 3mm. The expansion is what lets it work on rough and ill-fitting surfaces, filling a joint the two faces do not close properly. It also means you should not over-apply on a visible joint: more adhesive than the gap needs will push out further than you expect.

Waterproof, meeting BS-EN 204 D4, is a meaningfully stronger claim than the water-resistant rating carried by other adhesives in the range. D4 is the most demanding durability class in that standard. It is still not a rating for permanent immersion — see the limitations below.

Where to use it

Liquid Nails Rapid Cure is ideal for use on:

• Timber, MDF and LOSP-treated pine
• Tiles
• Masonry and concrete
• Metals
• Rubber
• Plasterboard
• Most plastics — but not polypropylene or polyethylene

It is weather resistant and suitable for indoor and outdoor applications, and it is the option in the construction adhesives range to reach for when the job is time-sensitive, when the timber is damp or poorly seasoned, or when both surfaces are non-porous.

How to apply it

Before you start: do not swallow, use in a well-ventilated area, and avoid contact with skin and eyes.

1. Prepare the surfaces. Ensure the surface is clean and free from dust and grease. Remove any pooled water.
2. Cut the cartridge tip, fit the nozzle and cut it to size (5mm).
3. Apply a bead along the length of one bonding surface. On broad surfaces, apply beads every 40 cm.
4. Position the pieces and press firmly together. Fix with sufficient nails, screws or clamping to hold the assembly and achieve contact over the total bond area. It remains repositionable for up to 5 minutes after fitting.
5. Allow it to set for 15–20 minutes on porous surfaces before removing temporary fasteners or clamps. Expect longer for very dry timber, heavier objects, less porous surfaces or cold weather.

Note the distinction between the two sets of timings. Removing clamps at 15 to 20 minutes on a porous substrate is realistic; loading the joint properly is a job for after the 24-hour full cure.

Limitations — where Rapid Cure should not be used

• Not suitable for bonding polypropylene and polyethylene. The product page also excludes Teflon.
• Should not be applied below 5 °C.
• Do not use as the sole bonding agent for structural bonding.
• Not for permanent water immersion. Waterproof and immersible are different things.

Clean up

Clean tools and surfaces immediately with acetone or mineral turps while the product is wet. Dry product has to be removed by chiselling, scraping or sanding. With a polyurethane that expands as it cures, cleaning up promptly is worth more than usual — the cured material is hard and it is bonded to whatever it touched.

Safety and transport

The Australian SDS, version 4.0, 12 April 2024 classifies Rapid Cure as hazardous and uses the signal word Danger. Its hazard codes are H315, H317, H319, H332, H334, H335, H351 and H372. These cover skin and eye irritation, skin and respiratory sensitisation, inhalation harm, respiratory irritation, suspected carcinogenicity and organ damage from prolonged or repeated exposure.

The SDS does not classify it as Dangerous Goods for road, rail, sea or air transport. The previous Class 3 / UN 1133 statement was incorrect. Transport status does not remove its handling hazards.

Read the complete SDS and cartridge label before use. Use adequate ventilation, avoid breathing emissions and prevent skin and eye contact. Follow the SDS’s protective-equipment requirements, including suitable respiratory protection where an inhalation risk exists. Do not enter confined spaces where vapour may have accumulated. Do not assume that a small job or an open garage removes exposure risk.

How fast is it really?

Initial cure is 10 minutes and full cure is 24 hours. On porous surfaces you can remove temporary fasteners or clamps after 15 to 20 minutes.

How long do I have to reposition a piece?

Up to 5 minutes after fitting. Working time is 5 minutes.

Can I use it on damp timber?

Yes. It adheres to damp and poorly seasoned timber and other damp surfaces, and it actually requires moisture to cure. Remove any pooled water first.

Why is my bond taking so long to cure?

The adhesive cures with moisture. Very dry timber, less porous surfaces, heavier objects or cold weather all slow it down. A very light mist of water sprayed on the surfaces may help speed up the cure.

Is it waterproof?

Yes — it is a waterproof bond and meets BS-EN 204 D4. It is still not suitable for permanent water immersion.

Can I use it outside?

Yes, it is weather resistant, with a service temperature range of -15 °C to 100 °C after full cure. Do not apply it below 5 °C.

Will it bond two non-porous surfaces?

Yes, it gives a durable waterproof bond even between two non-porous surfaces. Expect a slower cure than on a porous substrate, since there is less moisture available.

What gap will it fill?

Up to 3mm. It can be used on rough and ill-fitting surfaces, and it expands slightly as it cures.

Will it stick to plastic?
